Newbie - Getting started and IPTV
Added by Ron Von over 8 years ago
Hi all, well I must say I am interested in trying this. I have it (TVheadend) successfully installed on FreeBSD OS (an amazing UNIX based OS by the way, love it). I can access it from the web browser and while my 1st attempts at building some 'channels' failed, it sure does look like it is ready to serve. BTW when I say channel I really mean a single instance of the back-end of TVheadend RXing from an IPTV TXer. I don't mean the front-end where channel 555 is coming from TVhead. Feel free to correctly my use of terminology for use here in this forum.
I looked through the Wiki pages, but it feels like I am missing that good "ah ha" document. That just said, to help focus the discussion I do not have any tuner devices at the moment. Not sure if I will get any either, since where I live there are only 2 HD OTA 'clear' channels. What I am really interested in is getting some IPTV channels up and running. I found some "free IPTV" references on the Internet, and I tried using the listed http://ip.address:xxxx stream links, but ultimately the mux 'channel' would show "fail" after it scanned.
I tried by creating a network in DVB inputs. Then I created a mux and added that network, along with the IPTV stream URL. When I ran scan the log showed a bunch of stuff like it was trying, but as mentioned earlier it would fail.
So I guess my questions are:- Are there IPTV channels freely and clearly available (via the Internet) in Canada? If yes can anyone provide URLs for 'directories' of these IPTV streams?
- Are there IPTV channels fee-for-service available (via the Internet) in Canada? If yes can anyone provide URLs for 'directories' of these IPTV streams?
- Assuming there is, what steps do I need to do to get IPTV streams/channels up and running?
Sorry for what I'm sure is a lame newbie 1st post, but thought I ask the pros who can boil it down. In the meantime I'll try to find some good discussion posts on the forum.
Thanks a bunch everyone.

Firstly make sure you're running 4.0.x or 4.1.1943+ it needs to be newer than 1942, there was a bug that's been fixed in 1943, secondly make sure the streams you're adding are mpegts format.
There are some test files available here http://www.w6rz.net/ that you can try (you'll need to extract/serve them on your own local webserver).
As for finding iptv streams (at least reliable ones) I'm not sure, I know you can add filmon streams but that can be complicated.

Where might I find how to do this? Are there some free streams I can use to verify a working configuration before I consider buying a paid subscription?
Can anyone else suggest any MPEG-TS IPTV streams (free or paid), or is everyone using satellite? And should I also be considering using ffmpeg to convert other types of IP streams into mpeg ts ?

So I am getting the hang of this. I managed to find some test streams on the internet, and get some basic stuff working on TVheadend, but well that is just it, they are test streams. I find it real hard to believe no one on this forum knows of free or fee IPTV .ts based streams.
Another question, are there satellite receivers that have an IP output with .ts format? Keep in mind I am in Canada, if that matters.
Thanks again.

Anyone using satellite receivers that have an IP output in Canada? Can you explain your set up? Anyone doing this with FreeBSD? Thank you.
