Tvheadend 4.0.8~wily on Ubuntu 15.10 Not finding any EPG Data at all

Added by Richard Templeman over 8 years ago

I have a TBS5928 adapter USB QBOXS2 which runs perfectly OK on Windows 8.1 attached to same PC (dual boot with ubuntu), using DVBViewer media player. This gets all EPG data from Astra28.2E and can view all channels OK, record, etc all working.

On ubuntu on the same PC, I have recently configured tvheadend for the first time and can view Astra-28.2E channels OK from the Play button in the configuration->dvb inputs->services tab. But there is no EPG data.
I have checked the EPG configuration and am using EIT only (no internal or external grabbers).

Here's a sample output from syslog:

This is repeating for all the channels similarly.

Is this a tvheadend problem? Could it be the adapter?

I would most grateful for any help. (I have additionally filed this today under another forum thread which looked very similar:REF???)

Try increasing the skip initial bytes option in the adapter config.

Have tried a few low values, e.g. 2, 4, 8, 16, whilst monitoring the syslog whilst the EPG scan is running. Let it run for a few minutes on each setting. Problem still there, i.e. Checksum errors still being output and No channels are appearing in the Configuration->Channel/EPG->Channels page.

Does the change take effect immediately after saving the parameters?
What values should be used? The config documentation doesn't give any clues.

When i first setup my ubuntu server i couldnt get epg working.
What worked for me was deselecting all over the air grabbers including eit, and just leaving opentv-sky uk selected, save configuration and boom over 11000 epg entries :) havnt had problem with it since.

Usually takes a restart of the service to pull in the EPG data for the first time.

Thanks for the info guys. Much appreciated!
I have now configured opentv only as suggested, skip initial bytes set to 8.
Restarted tvhheadend (/etc/init.d/tvheadend stop / start) and now get the following in syslog:

richard@zoostorm:~$ cat /var/log/syslog | grep -i tvh

Feb 12 13:02:47 zoostorm tvheadend14578: START: HTS Tvheadend version 4.0.8~wily started, running as PID:14578 UID:125 GID:44, CWD:/ CNF:/home/hts/.hts/tvheadend

No channels were found

I get the same result with scan initial bytes set to 16 ( I am guessing these)

I am floundering here, any more ideas, please.

I have tried getting EPG data from XMLTV tv-grab-uk-rt (Radio Times) and am getting the right messages in syslog eg:

etc..... 91 configured channels for my region - UK Northwest, post code SK8
but I am not getting any channel data loaded into the EPG.

Is this now a permissions problem ?????
I have made myself a member of hts and video groups and still no channel data loaded.
I even changed permissions on all directories in /home/hts/.hts/tvheadend (they were drwx------ (owner only access)) Used:find -type d -exec chmod 755 {}
Still no data received.

Should I be running tvheadednd as user hts????

HELP!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!

Why are you using XMLTV for EPG? Tvheadend is able to use and see epg data from Freeview, Freesat and OpenTV (Sky).

I believe that many of the muxes on Freesat carry the EPG data you may just be missing the home transponders.

I'm more than happy to help you via IRC if you'd like. https://kiwiirc.com/client/chat.freenode.net/?nick=tvhhelp|?#hts (just type /msg mpmc help!) I'm here til 10pm UK time :)

I have found the solution to the problem! It was me! I hadn't mapped the channels to services as described in Step 6 of the Configuration Guide.
Once the mapping completed, everything started working. I am sorry to have wasted people's time!
As the sign in the Launderette (in 1980's) states: "When all else fails, read the instructions" (I believe this pre-dates "RTFM")
