Checking signal levels with tvheadend

Added by Rob Mccombe almost 9 years ago

Hi all :)
I was wondering if there is a way to view signal levels of all muxes for my dvb-s tuners for setting up my dish.
A recent house move and putting my dish up is proving a little difficult.
I have a sat finder gadget and I have got a old openbox that I plug into it whilst setting dish up in the past with no problems.
But I'm struggling this time, I setup the dish with the sat finder and everything is sweet but then when I disconnect the sat finder and fit the cable directly into the lnb as it should be, half my channels either brake up or show no signal. It only works with the sat finder connected lol, vet biZzare.
I just want to know if I can monitor signals on muxes in tvheadend as it will prob make my job easier.

Cheers

If you use Kodi as a frontend, you can tune to a specific channel and press the "O" key to see a bar graph with Signal Quality and SNR readings, though I cannot say how accurate these are. However this is really only helpful if you already have some kind of lock on the signal, not if you are trying to find the satellite in the first place. There are some Linux programs in this package that may be helpful:

https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/LinuxTV_dvb-apps

However they are command-line driven and I personally have no idea how to use them, in fact if you figure it out and can explain it in a way that dummies can understand I wish you would, because this is something I've also wanted. There are a LOT of utilities in that package and I'm not even sure which one, if any, could be used for finding and peaking a dish. I have stared at this page several times but in the end I just get lost because I have no idea where to start. All I want is to be able to say tune to tuner x (I have more than one tuner) using a specific frequency and polarity (might also need to specify the symbol rate) and give me a running display of the signal strength and signal quality. The other thing I've wanted it to be able to blind scan a satellite, but if any of those utilities can be used for those purposes, I need understandable instructions and so far I have failed in my quest to find them. Maybe you'll have better luck; if so PLEASE share what you learn, even if it's just a link to a human-readable page (NOT a man page) or to a video explaining the process.

As far as I'm aware szap-s2 can check signal level of a frequency you select and which adapter to do that from.

Although I'm not 100% sure how that works. I did have a play as I have a tbs card and that utility was included in the tbs driver but I now use open source drivers for my tbs card and this utility isn't included.
I will look into this and hopefully come back with some information as these look like some handy utils that I could use but I was just looking for something a bit more simple.

Cheers
