Connecting multiple devices to one mux question

Added by Rob Mccombe almost 9 years ago

Hi everyone.

Question for you all. I've done a little looking but can't find the exact answer I'm looking for.

Say for example to make this easier to understand. My server has a twin tuner dvb-s tuner card, I want to connect multiple devices on my network, the fitst device connects to BBC one, does that unlock the whole channels on that mux with only one tuner meaning that say I connect second device to BBC two(saying that was on same mux BBC one) would that then only use one tuner meaning I could then connect a third device to say sly one.

If this is the case do I have to alter any setting as when I try to connect a third device to tvheadend all channels say no adapter free within kodi, except for one of the channels one are the other 2 devices is playing.

Thanks

Yes, one tuner should receive the complete mux (hardware dependent). Tvheadend will then send the requested service to the client, if another client requests a service on the same mux as the first it'll reuse the data found on the already active tuner.

If this is the case do I have to alter any setting as when I try to connect a third device to tvheadend all channels say no adapter free within kodi, except for one of the channels one are the other 2 devices is playing.

You shouldn't have to do anything.

Try playing a mux in VLC (use the play links in the muxes tab), if that fails your tuner isn't sending the complete mux.

If you're using a SAT>IP server that sends only the request PIDs but that's a whole other kettle of fish..

Thanks

Been playing around with this and still having problems getting any more than a couple of devices running on this setup.
Here is what I have got exactly.
My server has a twin tuner dvb-s card and another card which has one dvb-s input and one dvb-t input.
The main server has kodibuntu installed and I have that running as my main tv in the living room, and I have 3 devices in other rooms, one each for the kids and one for me and the wife in the bedrooms.

I can record several channels at once from the same mux so all is good there but say I'm recording 1 channel, watching a different channel on a other device in our bedroom, the kids will try to use theirs and they shouting to us it says no adapter free lol. Surely there should be 2 free tuners.
If I'm recording a program on Sat and watching one on Sat then one of the kids try and put a freeview channel on surely tvheadnend should pick a free tuner say the dvb-t for example but I'm not sure it is doing.
All is installed correctly, I have created one network for the 3 total dvb-s tuners and created a network for the one dvb-t tuner, let it scan all muxes etc then select slyuk east Midlands bouquet to map and organise all channels as you suggested in a other post Mark :) is that correct should all be working.
Thanks

As long as the tuners are linked to the same network they should all be available for tuning.

There should be yes, try watching the log while attempting to use each tuner that should shed some light on whats going on here, check the status tab too.

Be sure that you've added the networks and enabled each adapter.

Think I have found the problem but I don't know what is causing it.
I've looked at the muxes tab and under my network for my dvb-t tuner all muxes have failed and its found no services.
I have tried deleting the network and adding a new but still no luck.
I am adding the predefined setting of Nottingham as that's where I am is this correct
I have plugged my antenna into my tv and all works fine through that so my aerial is obviously ok.

Cheers

Pre-defined mux lists are so out of date so no surprises there, you'll need to manually add the muxes. For DVB-T you'll get away with just adding one Tvheadend will find the rest via the NIT. If your tuner is DVB-T2 you'll have to add all those muxes manually.

See https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Nottingham for the frequencies you need to enter, e.g.

BBC A on Nottingham you would enter..

Freq: 522000000
Bandwidth: 8MHz
Transmission mode:8k

You should get away with leaving the other values as AUTO.
Remember to check the mode list on the ukfree.tv website for the correct values for each mux.

Hi Mark thank for trying to help me again :).

Ok so I have added the muxes the way you told me above but still even putting them in manually like you told me, they still all fail and no services found :( God knows what happening, all the dvb-s tuners working perfect now :) I just want to get this dvb-t tuner working and we should all be able to watch tv then.
Cheers

RE: Connecting multiple devices to one mux question - Added by Mark Clarkstone almost 9 years ago

:) Whats the name/brand of the device and what does it appear as in Tvheadend? I hope it isn't an Astrometa >.<!

Make sure you have the firmware for your device in /lib/firmware. You can check this by looking at dmesg (Look for any errors).

When I said "You should get away with leaving the other values as AUTO." I meant if you're lucky the driver for your device will accept the AUTO values, some drivers do, some don't, devices that use the dibcom chipset for example are extremely picky.

This is what I have to enter to get BBC A from Sutton Coldfield. You should be able to copy most of the settings except the frequency, use 522000000 instead of 650000000.

Let us know how you get on!

I'm at work at the mo,
But the card is a Hauppauge hvr-3000.
All drivers install by them selfs and I believe it's installed as a conexant cx22702/cx23882.

Cheers

Ok I think I've figured out why your DVB-T isn't working!

You've mentioned that you have three tuners I'm guessing these 3 tuners are on 2 cards rather than 3 separate cards.

E.g:

Card 1 -> DVB-S = one frontend
Card 2 -> DVB-T & DVB-S (The HVR-3000) = two frontends

Your card more than likely presents them as two frontends on one tuner rather than two separate tuners with one frontend each.

This is mine:

You'll notice that I have a number of adapters that support DVB-T and DVB-C even though it lists both I can only use one at a time.

You'll also notice that I've tagged two frontends (one DVB-T and the other is DVB-S) as "DVBSky T9580" this is because they're both on the same card but are separate tuners which means I'm able to use both separately at the same time.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and say your card is displaying DVB-S and DVB-T on the same tuner but as two frontends which means you'll only be able to use one at a time.

RE: Connecting multiple devices to one mux question - Added by Rob Mccombe almost 9 years ago

Thanks for the response Mark.

I have 4 tuners in total over 2 cards.
I have a tbs 6982 which has twin tuner dvb-s.

And then I have the hauppage hvr-3000 which has one dvb-s tuner and one dvb-t tuner.

My tree of adapters doesn't look like that it shows two adapter two tuners on each one.
How do I take a screen shot on Linux and I'll post later how mine shows.

Also if I can only use one at a time, how come I can't even get the dvb-t to scan for services even when no other tuner is in use.

Cheers :)

Print screen usually works the same as on Windows IIRC although that depends on your OS.

Also if I can only use one at a time, how come I can't even get the dvb-t to scan for services even when no other tuner is in use.

It is in use by Tvheadend just not active. Tvheadend has to open (and keep open) the frontend to prevent other programs from stealing it.

Cheers :)

RE: Connecting multiple devices to one mux question - Added by Rob Mccombe almost 9 years ago

So if I disable all dvb-s tuners in tvheadend then only enable the dvb-t tuner and it works, then is that the cause of my problem.

Thanks

RE: Connecting multiple devices to one mux question - Added by Rob Mccombe almost 9 years ago

Ok so something very bizarre has just happened,
I've got home to try everything you have suggested and to take a screenshot of how the tree off tuners looks in tvheadend and the dvb-t tuner has completely disappeared.
I'm not entirely sure what's happening here but something seems very odd lol.

I experience something similar with the Tevii S471. After a while it just generates errors and completely fails to tune, if I reboot it disappears from the system & the only fix it to halt so no power gets to the card, start it manually then it works again.

If that doesn't work, check dmesg for any errors, if it's not listed even after a retune your card might be failing or the driver screwed up.

Hi Mark.
So I've been playing around some more.
I did a restart of the server and my dvb-t tuner came back in tvheadend.
I don't know what made me try the following but I tried adding different transmitters instead of Nottingham and the predefined Waltham shows me services :) although some muxes don't find any services. Which settings should I add to get it to scan the latest up to date ones itself.

I can't understand why that works when I live in Nottingham but it has and it also works alongside my dvb-s tuners which is a bonus

If you use the pre-defined lists it'll add them regardless of whether you're able to receive them.

If you enter your postcode here https://ukfree.tv/prediction you should see what transmitters are available in your area. I'm in the CV10 Warwickshire area on the west/east midlands border so I can receive Waltham (East Midlands), Sutton Coldfield (West Midlands) and I can just about pickup BBC A from Belmont (East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire).

If you have a TV that you can auto scan that should give you some clues as to what transmitter your aerial is pointing at.

Hi Mark,
First off I would like to thank you for all your help, and wish you a merry Xmas :).

One last thing before I leave you all to it and enjoy the use of this excellent program.

I have all dvb-t services now thanks to mark, but will I need to map these to services as I just use the sly bouquet which automatically maps all my dvb-s services and puts them in order.
Now my dvb-t tuner isn't failing to scan will tvheadend do the rest for me when I'm using all my kodi devices or will the services need mapping for the dvb-t tuner if you know what I mean lol.

Reason I ask is because if I only scan for dvb-t services as though that's the only card in my server then select sly bouquet it doesn't auto map the channels for the dvb-t tuner

Cheers

You'll need to map them to channels in order for them to get used you can map them to existing Satellite services, like this..

1) Filter the network to only show the DVB-T Network (put your mouse over the column then click the down arrow -> filter).
2) Find the services you want to match use the service column and filter it like above OR you can go through the list.
3) Find the matching Channel name in the Channel column and tick the checkbox.
4) Save and you're done.

Reason I ask is because if I only scan for dvb-t services as though that's the only card in my server then select sly bouquet it doesn't auto map the channels for the dvb-t tuner

PS: It sounds like you're already very merry :p

Hi mark.
Sorry to be a pain again.
I've been using the new setup over Xmas and everything has been running sweet except one thing that's annoying me that I cannot for the life of me figure out.
I'm using kodi on all my devices and on some channels I get narrator (voice over).
I have looked at audio options etc in kodi but can't see anything.
Is this a tvheadend thing or kodi.
Cheers dude, hope you've had a good Xmas

Ah yes the bloody audio description! You can tell Kodi to use one audio track as default if you like or you can set ENG as exclusive to filter it out in Tvheadend like this..

Cheers dude, hope you've had a good Xmas
