HD doesn't work, SD works with PCTV DVB-S2 Stick 461e and Linux

Added by Stefan Gordes about 9 years ago

Hello,

I am using Ubuntu/Kodi 15 and TVHeadend 4.1. My tv stick is PCTV DVB-S2 Stick 461e.

I am watching via DVB-S/S2 on Astra 19,2E.

All SD (=not HD) channel work. But HD channels don't work. I get "service instance is bad, reason: No input detected".

Within Windows, everything works, I can watch HD without problems, so my TV stick should be capable and not the fault.

Have a look at this log:

I narrowed the problem a bit, it MUST have something to do with tvheadend.

I can watch HD tv with VLC, just with this parameters

dvb-s2://satno=1:frequency=11494000:voltage=18:srate=22000000

So what can be the cause, that tvheadend can't play HD?

TL;DR HD channels works with DVBLink and Synology DSVideo but not detected with TVHeadend

ASTRA 2E UK Freesat HD channels

I can confirm the same issue using the same stick scanning Astra 2E. Initially I had it plugged into my Synology and used DSVideo and DVBLink Tv Source. Both work and I can pick up the HD channels without issue. Then I installed TVHeadend 4.1.373 on the Nas. It picked up all the same channels but failed on the HD channels.

I plugged the usb stick into my Openelec box (Kodi 15) and installed the TVHeaddend service and pvr client. It detected the card and again picked up all channels except the HD ones.

Just to add:

I have a tuner (DVBSky T9580) with Montage M88DS3103/M88TS2022 chipsets (same as the above stick) and it receives HD services from Astra28E perfectly fine with Tvheadend (4.1.489), however this is a PCIE tuner & not a USB one.

I highly doubt both of your sticks are faulty, try doing Traces & see what gets reported.

Mark, thanks I have enabled traces and I auto scanning again and keeping an eye out for 11097V (ITV HD). As I mentioned though it works fine with DVBLink software on the same box as TVHeadend. Maybe the list of muxes needs to be updated?

That isn't a full trace, in the subsystems (trace and system) text boxes add +all & redirect it to a file (try /home/hts/tvhlog.txt), there is a lot of data so only add/enable it after Tvheadend has started.

If you're using the pre-defined muxes delete all of them & add a new mux manually (See image below for the BBC HD mux on 28E) make sure that you have Network discovery enabled & your Sat position set (you can find these options in Networks -> Edit on selected Network). Once you have this mux added Tvheadend should find the rest of the live transponders from NIT. Force scan (In Networks) if you don't want to wait for it to trigger the scan.

Thanks again Mark. Manually adding them worked on TVHeadend on my NAS so maybe the predefined muxes are wrong? It didn't work on Kodi box but that might be a separate issue since my Kodi box is an imx6 arm (Cubox-i4) and I have heard there are issues with the patched kernel in that. The main reason I wanted to use TVHeadend is the EPG. You have to buy software from DVBLink to get one with their server so if the EPG works then I am happy to use the NAS as the TVHeadend server.

^ The pre-defined muxes are always out of date, the best thing to do is add one known working transponder & let Tvheadend find the rest, I usually add the Sky Home Transponder & the Freesat Home transponder, 11778 V 27500 2/3 & 11428 H 27500 2/3 (add three more zeros to these when adding to Tvheadend.)

^^ The EPG does work pretty well however it does have a few issues depending on the grabber used the sky opentv grabber for example sometimes doesn't fully decode the programme names correctly e.g. American Dad is decoded as "American D" etc. Also watch out for duplicate programme ids I've only ever seen ITV channels with this issue it appears to only affect TV programmes at night though. Jackpot247 (on ITV) usually ends up being called "This is ITV+1".

Ok guys I've figured something out.

It would appear my DVBSky T9580 does have issues tuning to some frequencies however this seems to be caused by a code/driver change in some newer kernels!

I went from 4.1.6 which tunes 11778V and others perfectly fine to kernel 4.2.1 which completely refuses to tune to 11778V!

What kernel versions are you guys using?

RE: HD doesn't work, SD works with PCTV DVB-S2 Stick 461e and Linux - Added by Stefan Gordes about 9 years ago

Kernel: Linux 3.18.14-031814-generic
HTS Tvheadend 4.0.5

edit: Did an distro-update today, since then HD is working. I don't know why, but currently it is finally working again. Great =)

edit2: It worked yesterday, today it doesn't work again. I give up, I really don't know why HD doesn't work anymore.

You could try 4.1.9 if you want, I'm building it now & will report back.

How do you get 4.1.9?
The newest version I could find was the 4.0.7

Kernel version or Tvheadend version?
You can get kernel versions here https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v4.x/ but any kernel from 3.18+ should work fine.

if you want the newest Tvheadend version use git master at https://github.com/tvheadend/tvheadend

The patch (this one here: https://patchwork.linuxtv.org/patch/31598/) should be in kernel 4.3+ hopefully.

I have the same issue(HD channels aren't working while SD working fine) with the 461e stick and latest tvheadend 4.3 compiled from source .

Has anyone solved the issue ? How can be solved ?

Thanks

Have you tried others apps? dvbv5-scan/zap? Additionally have you tried the work arounds as suggested on the linuxtv.org wiki?

I've already placed the firmware file inside /lib/firmware and after that the device started working but just for SD channels, HD channels are loading but I can only see squared images.

I'm on a raspberry Pi 3 ...
