Software/hardware to tvheadend server

Added by Gert Winther about 9 years ago

Hi

Im having a PC (32bit) which is a couple of years old and a new HDhomerun 4DC.

I'd like to try to install a tvheadend server, but how do I start?

I guess the old PC-soloution would'nt be the best soloution,
but I'd like to start here, and if I get success,
I'd like to buy new hardware for the setup later.

The old PC has Windows 7 installed at the moment.

Can this OS be used to run tvheadendserver, or do I need to install new OS?

I just with success (I think) installed Openelec with tvheadend.
Its possible for me to enter the tvheadend setup from another computer.

But is this the best way to run a tvheadend server?
I don't understand why the GUI is KODI?

Yes, just load http://IP:9981 on another machine (IP being the address of the machine you installed openelec on)

That depends, do you want to use this machine as a desktop, htpc only or just a headless server?

If a desktop install something like Ubuntu desktop 14.04 LTS (for stable long term support) or 15.10 for more up to date (slightly less stable) system with a GUI.

You can stick with openelec if you plan on attaching a screen to the machine for media playback or install Ubuntu server or debian for a headless one. - You'll need to ssh into the machine (if headless) to administer it though.

I don't understand why the GUI is KODI?

That's because openelec is mainly used for HTPC systems.

Take a look at this WIP doc @ http://docs.tvheadend.org/ that should help a little.

You may need to build your own packages of Tvheadend for use with the HDHR as I believe it uses some odd protocol.
