DVB-S2 - Brazil - Unscramble channels - Noob Question

Added by Claudio Donate almost 10 years ago

So, just earlier today I've build my first OpenELEC system with a Raspberry Pi.

Now I'm thinking about buying one usb DVB-S2 to connect to my satellite dish.

My question is, Tvheadend is able to decode the channels? Is that how it works?

I'm really new to this game and I don't want to spend 100+ dollars for a DVB-S2 receiver and not work.

Any help or suggestion is very appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. No Tvheadend will not descramble channels on its own, you need access to a card via a backend such as oscam for tvheadend to be able to descramble the services.
  2. You need to make sure you have a device that's supported out of the box on the kernel used in your Pi, I believe the latest kernel via rpi-update is 3.18.*+. Also on my Pi it fails to descramble HD services, SD services are work fine, but YMMV. As for tuners don't bother with TBS ones unless you're sure the drivers are in the kernel, I don't think there is any! I'm currently using a Technisat Skystar USB HD which is old as the hills but it works great!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply, Mark.

So I need Oscam and Tvheadend working together for them to unscramble the channels.

Do you use them? Is the service stable?

Can you point me to any tutorial for combining Tvheadend and Oscam? So I can see how much work is involved.

Thanks!

Yes, local or remote.

Yes and yes, Although without access to a card oscam is pretty much useless.

There are many tutorials online, if you know what encryption system your card/provider uses Google it + Oscam. I believe there are a few tutorials in this forum if you look around.

You simply add the oscam access details into tvheadend (these vary depending on the protocol used, cwc or capmt is the most common).
