Timing and overrunning/adjacent programs
Added by Chris MacIntosh-Dixon about 10 years ago
Hi,
I've got a question about the start early and finish late settings in 3.4.
If I have both of these enabled, and I'm recording a program that starts as soon as the previous one finishes, can I force the 1st program to finish 'on time' and not late, and the 2nd program to start recording 'on time' and not early?
Normally as the night progresses, the programs start later and finish later, so I'd like to enable this option (at least the finish late one).

Unless you have a spare tuner to which the second programme request can subscribe, I believe the first recording will always lock the second one out until it's finished.
You could look at using different recording profiles, though - a default with +/- 5 minutes, a 'finish on time' that has no extra time afterwards, and a 'start on time' that has no extra time before. You'd just need to think about things.
In the current master (3.9.x), you can also set recording priorities... I haven't tested, but I believe this would allow a more-important second recording to interrupt a less-important first one. You'd still need to watch extra time, though, as you'd interrupt #1 with the few minutes defined before #2, so could lose the end of a programme.
Merged channels and multiple tuners are the safest bet IMO.
