heavy discontinuity/errors with TBS 6985

Hi guys,

Maybe someone can help, as this is driving me nuts. SD channels play mostly fine, but most HD channels cause errors to a different degree. Please help me troubleshoot this.

My setup is as follows:

- two quattro LNBs at Astra 19 and Hotbird 13 (position A and B)
- 8/1 unicable multiswitch
- TBS 6985 with vendor drivers v140819 from their site
- Tvheadend 3.9.1367~gca742e0~trusty
- Ubuntu 14 LTS - 3.13.0-32-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 15 03:51:08 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
- for the purposes of troubleshooting I have only one adapter active, unicable slot assigned to this adapter, two networks scanned, both networks assigned to this adapter in the unicable settings, no pin. all idle scans and epg grabs turned off.

On some HD channels I get the occasional picture and sound distortion, they are watchable, but it's bad enough to seek remedy :) Typical log below:

I have also enabled MSI interrupts as advised. Noone got an idea how to go about troubleshooting?

I had a TBS 6981, and I always had troubles with continuity errors. It also used to run very hot. I cut down an old heatsink I had, put a bit of thermal paste on it and tied it on with a cable tie and that made a noticeable difference. A fan might have made it even better, but I just cut my losses and got something better. I don't know if they fixed these problems in newer cards.

You should also read this thread https://tvheadend.org/boards/5/topics/12963?page=1&r=13110 that I started a few weeks ago.

Digital Devices cards (CINE S2 with addon card DuoFlex S2) has the same problems so it seems to be a multiple of possible factors as far as I think:

1. PCIe x1-buss problems (I changed my motherboard to Asrock H61 PRO BTC that has 5 (!!) PCIe x1 slots. http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H61%20Pro%20BTC/index.asp

2. Linux-driver problems (many people in Windows environments with the same tuner cards seems to NOT have these problems).

Of course, you first need to verify that your signal coming in to the tuner cards are good enough with good signal quality.

I went to USB boxes, so this probably won't be much help to you. I've got a Tevii S660 (now superceded by the S662) which gives no errors but occasionally throws some sort of i2c error and has to be unplugged before the whole system needs rebooting, and a Technisat Skystar USB HD which I repeated the heatsink trick on. I don't know why, but DVB-S cards seem to be a lot less reliable nowadays. My most reliable card is still a ten year old Twinhan, which sadly doesn't do S2. Plus the company has long gone and I've no idea if there are any linux drivers around as I only use it on an old XP box.

UPDATE: Tried bypassing the multiswitch and connected the tuner directly to the LNB - HD channels started playing nicely! One would think that the 8/1 unicable switch is the culprit, BUT we also tried hooking up a Dreambox, WITH the switch in the loop, and it works just fine where the TBS tuners fail.

What the hell is going on?!

P.S. The funny bit is that not all HD channels are affected, some play nicely even at high bitrates (10Mbit+) with the occasional hiccup. However, the ones on the frequency from the screengrab above (Hotbird13/12475.5H) are horrible.

I have the same problem with cc errors (about 50 errors/hour). But if I run stress tool on Ubuntu (enough for 1 core of 4: “stress – c 1”) the cc errors disappeared (0 errors for 5 hours). I’m not Linux/HW expert so I don’t know what does it means. Can someone help me to interpret/solve this problem?

My system:

MB: Supermicro X10SBA (J1900 chipset), Bios v.: R 1.0c
TV card: TBS6985
OS: Ubuntu server 14.0.4.1 (3.13.0-35-generic), TBS Driver – 140819, MSI enabled,
TVheadend: 3.4.28

Eventually I got rid of the multiswitch and replaced it with a regular 9in/8out. Everything seems to be just fine now.

Can someone try the stress test? I tried it with CrazyCat drivers and 3.16.3 kernel with same result.

Slaine,

You're right. I'm using a Debian VM running on Arch Linux as host on and AMD base Asus KCMR-D12. Normally I get artifacts constantly (With both official and open source driver) but if I run stress -c 1 it is perfect.

Will look into this.
