SAT>IP - Faq

Added by Raymond Paulsen over 10 years ago

Lots of developing going on with SAT>IP,it cought my attention.

i did look into it here: http://www.satip.info

So it seem to mee this is some kind of new stuff puting the dvb-s/s2 layer directly into IP.

there is little information on that page on how this is done, is the scrambled channels just put on ip layer still scrambled, or is there something i miss there?

is it multicast style, like taking all muxes and stram or is it unicast?
How does this system scale?
is there hardware stbs with CI slots (if scrambled ip)

how does the tvheadend come into picture here? is it for reciving ip streams (scrambled) and decode those?

Had been nice if anybody could shout in with some info on this.
it realy look interesting.

Raymond,

SAT->IP with tvh is essentially another way to attach tuners. Instead of using pci-e or usb you talk via ethernet to them. AFAIK you just add SAT->IP servers/tuners to your network and tvh will discover them using UPNP. You will find them along with yout other tuners and configure them quite similar.

perexg, the developer of this new tvh feature, commented on IRC, e.g. start reading here:
http://colabti.org/irclogger/irclogger_log/hts?date=2014-05-14#l170

Interersting is the price. You can get e.g. a 4-tuner-box (DSI 400 GSS.box) for €130 Euro. And you can attach it to tvh w/o fighting any dvb driver issues/imcompatibilities.

Best regards,
Dietmar.

Hi Dietmar

The info you provide is good to know but it doesnt answear my questions. by the way the price on this equipment seems very good. thats why iam also interested.

what i would like to know is a little more technical then that.

how does this SAT>IP server put the streams on IP layer, is this unicast or is it multicast.
if its unicast style it means that there is a limit in this system on how many clients you can have on it, sins each client take 1 tuner out of the pool of available once.

how does the scrambled muxes cope with this?

i did give the documentation for this system a go, but its very little technical information about this, scrambled services is not documented at all. same with the transport layer.

had been nice if there was someone that could fill in this parts..

Hi Raymond,

sorry... I mainly answered to:

how does the tvheadend come into picture here? is it for reciving ip streams (scrambled) and decode those?

Concering the 2nd question... tvh receives the scrambled stream and decodes, just as with any other DVB tuner.

Maybe it's best to join #hts on irc.freenode.net and ask there for further details.

Dietmar.
