SAT>IP Queries
Added by Kev S over 10 years ago
I've noticed the SAT>IP Working going on in the Repo and it's all very interesting - alas it's a new technology and there is little info out there - so I was wondering if anyone playing around with it had answers for a few q's I have?
The main reason I am asking these is because I was planning on adding a couple of DVB-S2 USB tuners this year, but by the time I've added a USB Hub, Run a new piece of Coax from the spare cable in the lounge to my room, and added the satellite amplifier I'm looking at the best part of £230+ which makes the £150 for a Triax TSS 400 (for example) and it's 4 DVB-S2 tuners rather appealing.
1. When used with TVHeadend* it appears that each tuner has a 1:1 relationship with TVHeadend. Assuming this is correct if I got a future TV which supported SAT>IP could that use one of the tuners with TV Headend using the other 3 or does TVHeadend need exclusive access to all the tuners?
2. Can it be used with less than 4 LNB inputs? The Triax specs mention single and dual LNB inputs so those are possibilities, but what about 3? **
3. What about LNB 1,2,and 3 being connected to 28.2'E and LNB 4 connected to 19.2'E (on my dish plonked in the garden on F1 race weekends)?
4. If I've done my maths correctly my HomePlugs should be able to support two multiplexes in full (44Mbps according to Flysat, my homeplugs themselves sync at 185Mbps but are limited to their 10/100 Ethernet ports! - When copying files windows shows 11.3MB/S which is just shy of the 12.5MB/S theoretical maximum) so I should be okay streaming up six (SD)*** channels over them shouldn't I?
5. Can the tuners control a DiSEqC switch should I use one later (e.g. Astra 19.2, 23.2, and 28.2E + Hotbird)?
- * Obviously still under development so I am aware this may change
- ** In our lounge we currently have 4 satellite cables coming through the wall (alas I'm in a shared house and I can't run another one from the dish to bedroom) - one of these threads it's way to my bedroom via some TV Coax and into a USB Satellite tuner, 2 are in a Sky+ HD Box, and 1 is in a Freesat box (which TBH is only used for the USB Playback) so I will initally be able to reroute one cable (the Freesat one) to the TSS400, and then add a second one (from my room) when I'm happy it's working. However come Christmas my housemates Sky+ introductory offer ends and he'll be cancelling the sub so I can nick one if it's feeds (the other going back to the Freesat box).
- *** When recording more than six channels my media centre PC runs out of steam anyway - HDD, USB, or Processing power could be to blame - unless deliberately testing stuff to the limit the most I've ever had is five TV channels + one radio station so this isn't too limiting.

I'm currently using a OctopusNet from Digital Devices for SAT>IP with tvheadend.
To answer your questions:
1. You can choose which tuner is used in tvheadend and which one remains free.
2. Sure if you don't connect one of the tuners to a LNB it will work with 3.
3. You can create different networks (think of satellites) in tvheadend with different muxes and then assign a Network to a tuner.
4. I'm using HomePlug too for my connection between the OctopusNet and tvheadend. Currently I only have a twin tuner and it works. BUT: the powerline is a bit like wifi. You will always have some distortions on the line by other devices that are plugged in, so you shouldn't expect it to always run at it's peak speed. You will get screen artifacts/distortion if the speed goes down suddenly (I have that from time to time) and UDP packets will be dropped. Keep that in mind. You will want to have a cable connection if you can't live with a few dropped packets every now and then. (I will definitely go for a GBit cable in the near future)
5. DiSEqC is supported by SAT>IP. My OctopusNet can control it, I don't see why the Triax shouldn't.

Hi Hendrik,
hab dich wieder hier gefunden da es in Git kein Foren gab, wollte dich fragen wie du es gebuildest für deine ReadNS, ob du Cross Compile verwendet hast.
Mfg
Mesut

Hi Mesut,
I'm answering this in english, because others may be interested into this too. I did not cross compile, I compiled it directly on the NAS. I have a x86 Atom based ReadyNAS Ultra 4. You should try it that way, if you can get root/SSH access to your device. Cross compiling for a different platform is always a bit more complicated, because you first need to have a working build environment. Since ReadyNAS Raidiator is a special Netgear mixup of Debian 4,5 and 6, it is not easy to create a sane build environment on another system. I haven't tried the newer ReadyNAS OS6, they may have learned a few things from their previous "mistakes".
Building it was straight forward then, just the regular ./configure --disable-dvbscan, make, make install.

Answering my own questions in case anyone else is wondering (using a Triax TSS400 on the latest firmware) - some things mentioned have only just been sorted in TVHeadend so make sure you are running 3.9.1285~g1579757 or later.
They do indeed have a 1:1 relationship. I've been able to use apps on a specific tuner. I guess the exact question when it comes to TV's depends on how they implement it.
Yes - I've got two cables connected to 3 inputs (one directly, and the other is split to the other two via a splitter) and this works well (TVHeadend has a concept of slave tuners so when two are sharing the same cable they can both tune to different frequencies in the same band - e.g. Low Band Vertical). LNB 4 is connected to my 19.2'E dish on race weekends and works well.
I've managed to watch and record a combination of SD and HD channels (including recording all six BBC Commonwealth Games SD streams while watching STV HD) and this handles well. I do know my HomePlugs show very good connections between one another though so YMMV.
5. Can the tuners control a DiSEqC switch should I use one later (e.g. Astra 19.2, 23.2, and 28.2E + Hotbird)?
The UI on the Triax does indeed mention DiSEqC (but I've not needed to use it), The LNB options in the UI are as follows:-
LNB Type: Unicable Quattro Quad/DiSEqC
Presumably Unicable just needs a single cable connected to port 1 and does the Unicable stuff
Quattro would do the Low/V, Low/H, Hi/V, Hi/H on the ports as marked and internally switch the signal
Quad/DiSEqC would do the normal switching (and is the mode I use).
- *** When recording more than six channels my media centre PC runs out of steam anyway - HDD, USB, or Processing power could be to blame - unless deliberately testing stuff to the limit the most I've ever had is five TV channels + one radio station so this isn't too limiting.
My Revo has been a lot happier recording stuff on the SAT>IP tuner, not had a single drop out (except during heavy rain) when those were frequent on my USB DVB-S tuner. The channel changing has also been noticeably faster. I've been able to record six SD channels and watch a HD channel too. Something I couldn't from my USB tuners.
Now to find a DVB-T2 SAT>IP Tuner :p

Now to find a DVB-T2 SAT>IP Tuner :p
OctopusNet can do that when equipped with a DVB-T/T2/C combo receiver module.

Hello everyone,
i hope you can help me.
I buy the Octopus Net with duo dvbc.
Tvheadend see the net tuner but when i try to tune i get this error:

Does it work in OctupusCast?
Which software version does your OctupusNet show in the web interface?
Why Tuner 3 and 4? Do you really have 2 tuner modules (4 Tuners)? Are you using mixed mode DVB-S and DVB-C?
RE: SAT>IP Queries - Added by over drive about 10 years ago
Thank you for your reply.
It work with DD TV.
OctopusNet 1.0.29
FW Date 09 Jun 2014 11:16

Tuner 1 DVB-C/T/T2
Tuner 2 DVB-C/T/T2
I only have one dvbc dual tuner module but tvh see 2 DVBT and 2 DVBC tuner.
Find attached a picture from the tvh webif.
RE: SAT>IP Queries - Added by Hendrik Noack about 10 years ago
Yeah I thought so.
The problem is: tvheadend Shows all 4 possible tuners, even if you only have one tuner module with 2 tuners. Your setup cannot work, because you are trying to use the two empty tuners. I don't know if this is a bug in tvheadend or the current OctopusNet firmware.
To get it working select your tuner no. 1 and the Switch it from dvb-t to dvb-c. This is possible because the OctopusNet DVB-C tuner module is capable of both, DVB-C and DVB-T. Now test your setup. If it works you can also switch the second tuner from DVB-T to DVB-C.
DVB-T is the default mode for equipped DVB-C/T tuner modules, so this may be misleading.
