Support for encrypted IPTV?
Added by Torbjørn Brekke over 10 years ago
I have the chance to get fiber in my house and have been trying to find out if Tvheadend supports encrypted IPTV. Is this supported?
I think the provider is using NDS. The provider is GET Norway, if anyone have any experience with them.
I have no info about the IPTV technology they use as I have not found anything about it on the web.

I'm not 100% on this and Adam may be best to answer but the way Tvheadend is laid out the IPTV mux will act just like a DVB mux.
with this there is a few possible ways they have protected the stream.
1. the computer you connect to knows your ip/mac and will only send you the correct channels not encrypted. the rest will fail to send. or not show up in your list.
2. you are given login details and it will work as above after login.
3. it will have encryption like a dvb stream and will require a subscription card to unscramble the signal in witch case you'll need to look into something like oscam. this is the least likely option though.
but looking at that company they are a cable company so they will use DVB-C to send there tv not IPTV.
where did you get the info that they use IPTV from?

Get Norway uses nds encryption on their boxes. This is for their hd content and requires a decoder box similar to dvb-s/s2. I dont know if it will work with oscam. I have not tried it, nor heard anybody running a setup with get and their program cards.
remember nds encryption is most likly the same as via hd. Not cracked..

@Gary
They use a subscription card from what I found out on their web pages. I was unsure if Tvheadend supported encrypted IPTV as I have not had any experience with it, and have not had the time to familiaries myself yet with IPTV as I found out on friday that I could get a fiber connection :)
The company that supplies the fiber connection is using Get as their TV provider, so it's not Get directly giving me the service. I know they use DVB-C in their network, but in local fiber networks (mostly electricity companies) they use IPTV.
@Raymond
I know about oscam, and from what i remember it workes with Get subscription cards. I do not think they use the same level of NDS as Viasat uses on their HD channels. But I have to find out a little bit more about how the situation is now a day.
Thanks for the info

if you want to use the subscription card with the IPTV i cannot see why it will not work using OSCAM and a usb card reader. only if they pair the card to there box will there be a problem but be warned you need to make sure to configure the card reader correctly or it can burn the card out.

Ok i see.. you are having viken fiber or loqal in forde/floro or something.. i have worked for them on their iptv solution. Yes get is the supplier of the downstream tv. But they operate their own tv headend solution. Mostly tandberg equipment.
This sytems uses a different build up then coax based eurodocsis from get. The problem is for the suplier is how to do access control as the content provider require a system for that. Coax has no access control pr.device, hence they need to use nds encryption solution for the access restrictions (sd content is free on their cable and no access controll)
Iptv has pr. Device access controll.. in their triple play solution ( phone, tv, internet) is all deliverd on the same fiber to the home. Its different vlan for each network. Tv network uses vlan 101 i think. This vlan ( network) has mac autorisation. No other access controll. Find your stb's mac and use that mac for your network card on tvheadend server and you will get access to the streams.

If you have a home central with 3 tv output and 1 internet. It should be sufficient to replace a stb with a tvheadend server as long as you can manipulate the tvheadend servers network card with same mac address, then you dont need to think about the vlans..
vlans is used on the fiber to your home central. Home central brings the different vlans to different interfaces in the home central. Vlan 100 to voip modem, vlan 101 to the 3 tv interfaces and vlan 102 to the single internet interface..
if you remove the home central and replace it with a cisco switch you need to map the vlans yourself.
if your fiber connection in to your house central is 100mbit you can max have 3-4 tv stream simultanious before the 100mbit pipe is congested.. this leaves no room for internet though.
Remember the tv streams is multicast.

The company that delivers the fiber here is Eidsiva.
They are using a Zyxel P-2812 as a Home Central from what I found on their pages. I do not know the speed of the fiber connection.
It says in the user guide for the tuners that you have to insert the subscription card, so it looks like it might be encrypted. I do not see why they would use a card, if it's not encrypted. It might also be that Get forgot to remove the info about the card for the network only tuners.
I'm not sure if I'm switching from satellite to IPTV as it is more expensive than Canal Digital, especially the TV2 Premier League channels, twice the price almost!
Thanks for your help
RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Raymond Paulsen over 10 years ago
Eidsiva yes. i know them to
they use Gpon, its a little different from normal ethernet..
they use DVB modulation in OLT network. take a look here on this description: http://www.bktel.com/bktel/prospects/v-oltproductinfo.pdf
its not Ethernet even though its fiber. its same modulation in that fiber as in normal dvb-s/s2.
this system has more in common with cabel tv then IPTV.
at the moment i dont think the tvheadend has the option to take this kind of modulation by ethernet.

if tvheadend is going to take this modulation by ethernet you are going to need to use oscam in combination with it. for the decryption part.
same encryption in this solution as get use in their cable.

I just got back from the info meeting Eidsiva had. I can't say they had a deep technical knowledge about their system :)
I tried to ask about the limit for how many channels the house central could handle, but they had no idea. The Get PVR had 4 "tuners", but could only record 2 and watch 1.
Since tvheadend do not support Gpon, I think I will still use satellite so I can use tvheadend for my recordings. In addition the premier league package is almost twice the price and I have to rent the tuners from them. Renting the Get Box 2 a year probably adds up to the amount Get pays for it.
The positive side IF I could get it to work with tvheadend is that I can have one box for TV/movies and get the HD channels from Viasat and premier league without using CD's tuner that I have to use now.
The link you gave me was a little bit too much technical for me to understand without having any experience with IPTV, but thanks anyway

Eidsiva has contractors working on the system they run for them. Its the supplier of the TV solution that maintance it, hence they only know how to run it. also they will probably play stupid to becouse they dont want anybody to know how it works so they can get around security mechanism.
anyway their system is very similar with the gpon solution Telenor uses in Forde/Floro, its not a good system if you ask me, its a "addon" solution for their SDH network, uses special equipment.
i did think alot of this today, and the Gpon is only deliverd to the house central " the zyxel box" after that its normal ethernet with multicast and 1 group pr.channel and it might be mac auth also. (no problem to get around that)
if tvheadend can utilize multicast streams, as it can (mumudvb works right?) you might get this to work. only way is to scan the tv port after the house central and see if its multicast. if so you add the multicast streams as iptv streams in tvheadend,
if you are able to add multicast streams in the tvheadend, they wil be encrypted with NDS (same shit sa get use)( a user said it works in OScam but i have not tested this) NDS is now sold to cisco, what plans do they have?
if you get OScam working with the subscription card you might get this to work.
this is a advanced solution and is by far tested. if you plan to go throug and try it, i can be of assistence.
RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Torbjørn Brekke over 10 years ago
It will still take some time before they start working, if they get enough people, but when it's up and running I will most likely be able to scan for multicast even though I do not have their TV subscription, right?
Most likely they'll start in the autumn, so I have some time to learn a little bit more about multicast, gpon and all the rest
Oscam will be the smallest problem and I have read on different forums that people use it with Gets NDS.
I'll contact you when I have the fiber up and running
RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Raymond Paulsen over 10 years ago
No i actuly think you need a valid tv subscription on your account before the tv ports and network is provision on your home central.
multicast is easy stuff, and gpon is not needed to learn to get this to work.
RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Torbjørn Brekke over 10 years ago
I guess time will show what I do. It tempting to get tv just to try to get it to work

Hi guys..
Maybe i can be of assistance here. I already have fiber from GET, it's actually ethernet from the switch in the basement to my appartment. I have setup a little setup where i have done a wireshark sniff of the entire bootup of the motorola iptv stb from get with some channel zapping. i am able to extract some multicast from that. i have even been able to add the multicast to tvheadend and it is recognized and was able to tell me the channel names and a lot of other stuff. look at the screenshot attached.
I am very new to tvheadend and to encryption and oscam and all that. i have already ordered a card reader (Norsk Tipping) hoping that i can use that?!?
The motorola STB comes with a sim card that i can use in the card reader. when it comes to decrypting the channels and check if they work of not i have not come that far and i would love some help if you guys are willing to work with me on this to figure it out!
RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Torbjørn Brekke over 10 years ago
You should be able to use the card reader from norsk tipping as far as I know. The only thing that might be tricky is to get the sim card back in the big smart card so it fits in the card reader. But that might be as simple as using a little scotch tape on the back :)
I have not tried to use NDS card from get in oscam, but from reports on other forums it should not be a problem. If you google get nds and oscam there should be some info around. I might be able to help if you are stuck.

Hey.
dj Beirut, looks like u have more experience with TVHeadend-IPTV than me. so could you please tell me how to add the IPTV-Links?
i have absolutely no clue how to add them. Also the official documentation is from 2012 and is outdated. Do you know an working tutorial?
I already enabled IPTV under Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> Networks
Than i wanted to add a Stream under Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> Muxes -> Add -> IPTV Network
but than i'm stuck. No idea what to add here.
I wish i would be already at your point on how to decrypt the channels I'm going to try it with DigitalDevices-CI and DeltaCam as soon as i have added some working streams..^^

RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Anonymous over 10 years ago
all you have to do now is to add the ip for the stream in URL: and the interface if you are using another network card for the ip streams like i am doing otherwise just keep it empty and press create. wait for a few seconds and see if you get a service. if so just map it to a channel and then you are done. Remember that it has to me MPEG-TS streams.
Torbjørn: about encryption.. does the card have to be from GET og can we use like Canal Digital card to decrypt the same channels like TV2 and C More.
I realize it is a stupid question specially if GET is encrypting the channels it self then we will have to use the card from GET! :/ btw.. it's really hard to find info only about GET because of the name! :@
RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Torbjørn Brekke over 10 years ago
You will have to use the card from get as it is get that codes the channels
I'll see if I can find some info about oscam and get.
RE: Support for encrypted IPTV? - Added by Torbjørn Brekke over 10 years ago
If you go to the mspc.no forum they have their own section for Get. Lots of info there, but you might have to dig a little to find the info
