Some audio streams are not recorded (YLE HD olympics)

Added by Wild Penguin over 10 years ago

Hi!

I jsut wanted to ask here before making a bug report, if this issue is already known (I couldn't find similar issues via Google, but it is often the matter of finding the right words to search with);

anyways, on some recordings not all audio streams are recorded. This has happened as I'm writing this; I've been recording some Olympics from YLE (Finnis public broadcasting company's) broadcasts from YLE 2 HD. There's only one audio stream in the recordings (Swedish 2.0 stereo), also according to mkvinfo. But the very same channel (from the very same antenna source from the wall socket) has two audio streams according to my TV (Svenska Dolby Digital 2/0 and Suomi Dolby Digital 3/2.1). So, the latter one is missing from the mkv made by tvheadend for some reason.

AFAICT this same issue has persisted on most recordings I've made from the Olympics, but I did do get some recordings with two audio streams (swedish and finnish). Sadly, I've deleted the recordings.

I've definately got some recordings (from Yle Teema documentaries originally by BBC) with original English audio and a Finnish dubbed one.

Is this issue known? Should I make a bug report?

There would probably be an excellent chance to debug this tomorrow. What could I do (tomorrow) to help debug this? A DVB mux dump, perhaps, if the issue is present?

I'm running on Gentoo with a (quite recent) GIT snapshot, which I'm just about to update to the current head.

Cheers!

There's been a long-standing issue with audio and mkv containers - in effect, the mkv specification seems to struggle if the audio stream changes format mid-way. So, for example, if it starts as stereo and then moves to 5.1, you can be stuck with only two channels because that's what the container reports.

Try .ts instead of .mkv, and see if problems persist. Many of us started on .mkv and have made the move to .ts for just this reason (although I still dislike the pts/dts errors that you inevitably get in .ts, which make splitting a damned nuisance - mkv solves these, but is even more pointless if it loses half the audio!).

Thanks for your reply! I will try .ts and see if it helps.

As a sidenote, I thought tvheadend splits .mkv recordings when there's a change in the transmission format (video or audio)?

I think that the developers tried putting chapter marks into mkvs at one point - if they're splitting them now, that would also make sense. Personally, I just gave up and moved to .ts and stayed there!

Thanks for your input!

After upgrading to the most recent git last saturday, and making some recordings on Sunday with the MKV format, I couldn't reproduce the issue. It could be something has been fixed in the git So, I've left my tvheadend to record in .mkv just for laughs and to see when it starts spewing out erroneus recordings ;) . So far, I think the recodings are OK although XBMC has problems with them.

(also OFFTOPIC: Do you have problems with the smileys thingie in the post form? I can't seem to be able to click on any of them unless I can move the mouse cursor over to them [MIND THE GAP] very quickly :D ).
