Soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck with 3.9
Added by Hugo Rodenburg almost 11 years ago
Hi all,
I encouter an issue on a test system with the current master branch (3.9.313~gf25d918). I'm not completely sure the problem is tvheadend's fault, but this occurs on 2 different systems which has been stable running ubuntu in the past. So it seems related somehow.
After a while (which can be 1 hour, or 1,5 day), the system locks up completely, and on the console these messages are displayed, referring to different processes/threads (like it seems to me):
BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 22s! [cwc_thread:855]
OR
BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 22s! [rsyslogd:706]
Please see attached screenshots for actual messages.
The system has an TBS6981 card which I know has issues. But this issues seems to be something different.
I'm using the drivers from TBS itself. Because the system also has an TBS6680 DVB-C card, I'm stuck with the TBS drivers. (Or does someone knows how to combine the linuxtv drivers and those from TBS??)
System specs:
Core 2 duo proc (tried 2 different systems)
Ubuntu 12.04 x64 (tried with stock 3.2 kernel and backported 3.8 kernel from repo)
TBS6981 (Latest drivers from TBS)
TBS6680 (DVB-c card. tried removing it from the system, issue still occurs)
Should I test with the linuxtv/opensource drivers for the TBS6981, to see if this issues still occurs?
It seems that this is a specific issue for me, since there are no reports on this issue.
Does anyone has a clue how to debug (or even resolve) this issue? If more information is needed, please let me know.
Regards,
Hugo

looking at them screens it's hard to say what caused it. you'll need to look in your kernel log in /var/logs/ (if i remember off the top of my head) it will give you more info on what happened. it most likely isn't tvheadend and a kernel bug, have you updated your system lately and had a new kernel added?

Thanks for your reply. I did check the kernel log (/var/log/syslog on Ubuntu). At the time of the crash it displays a few lines with garbage and no usefull information. I've used both systems before running Ubuntu 12.04 with it's stock kernel and they have been rock solid.
My guess it's a combination of the TBS drivers and Tvheadend. At this moment I've changed the TBS drivers to the linuxtv (by Luis) ones to see if that helps, and also trying to integrate the drivers for my TBS6680 card from TBS.

Well, since I have switched to Luis's drivers no lockup has occurred (yet...). So it seems an driver related issue. However, now I am unable to use my TBS 6680 card since I've removed the TBS drivers. Since that device never worked without issues either, I just gave up using it, since it's just a wast of time.

The IRQ problem ?
RE: Soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck with 3.9 - Added by Hugo Rodenburg almost 11 years ago
Thanks for your reply.
I think that's not very likely. I had the IRQ issue with my TBS6984, but this issue seems to be different. I'm more and more convinced it's really the (crappy) TBS driver, and that's a pretty safe assumption since a LOT of people have issues with these devices.
I've switched to the driver written by Luis, and still haven't had any issues yet.
The only drawback is that my other TBS6680 card won't work anymore. But that one wasn't stable either...

tbs6680 drivers are running very stable here, but I compile it directely into the kernel.
Have a look at (the README file of) https://github.com/bas-t/tbs6680
