Which Linux version

Added by Jacques van Langen about 11 years ago

Which Linux version is the best to get a good stable working Tvheadend backend system? What Linux version are the developers using? Should I use it also? At the moment I am trying to make a system with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit mininimal install on a motherboard with an AMD A6 processor. Should I prefer 32 bit Linux instead of 64 bit?

Hi Jacques,

Your question is a broad one (especially 'which version is best' is a hard question i guess).

Your processor sounds fine, there should be no reason to use 32 bit linux I think (I run a 64 bit Gentoo system).
About the version: Best might be to see what people use, but I guess Ubuntu or debian should be fine, and there are the packages precompiled for those systems.

Alex.

Given your questions, I have to assume that you're not vastly experienced with Linux - in which case, I'd go for an Ubuntu derivative.

Think about whether you genuinely want a minimal install or whether you'd benefit from a GUI (I'm very comfortable with the command-line, and still prefer GUI tools like gparted sometimes) - if your machine doesn't have the power, Xubuntu or similar is far kinder than full-fat Ubuntu.

And I agree with the 64-bit question... I see no reason to use 32-bit installations.
