WinTV PVR USB2 on TvHeadend US Analog Cable

Added by Justin Decker about 11 years ago

My cable company CCI flags all channels, so digital cable is useless for me. I downgraded to the lowest package available as a result and found a WinTV PVR2 USB2 on ebay for $15. Tested it and it works fine with Windows. Plugged it into my Ubuntu 12.04 box and I get the following dmesg output:

Seems to work OK but when I go to the tvheadend web server, it doesn't show it as an option. Is there any configuration I need to do to get it to do to be listed? I made sure that the 'hts' user has access to the video group. Though I do notice that tvheadend only lists dvb tuners as an option, and this isn't a dvb tuner.

By the way, I installed tvheadend using apt, should I do it a different way?

I know this is 3 years old, but BUMP
has anyone got this tuner to work.

Almost all cable companies have eliminated their analog channels. You'll know this has happened when the company is forced to give you a basic box even on the very basic plan. By eliminating their analog channels - they were able to add a lot more digital channels.

If you connect the cable to your TV diectly and can tune some channels - then you still have a few analog channels. If you can only get a signal with a cable box - the WinTV PVR USB2 will not be of any value. It also won't tune OTA digital signals.

I suggest getting a newer usb tuner. Monoprice has on for under $30 - you can find the Kworld 435q on ebay - and of course, there are hauppauge models for more money.

My cable provider still uses analog for the sd channels, I had a hvr-950Q that worked fine for ATSC HD OTA, but i never could get it to tune analog cable. I am trying to get rid of my old desktop and use a raspberry pi instead as my pvr. I can record most shows OTA, however there are still a few I like to record from pay tv which requires me to have an analog tuner.

In that case - according to the linux tv information: [[https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge]]

That tuner should be supported. It uses the em28xx driver - which should be there.

I would go ahead and setup the pi with tvheadend. For ease of use - I would suggest installing one of the libreelec builds.

Good luck!
