Help please - where are my recordings? SOLVED
Added by Malcolm Smith almost 4 years ago
Hi, I have made a couple of test recordings on the new install I am testing as a replacement for for my ageing Mythtv server.
System is TVH 4.2.8 installed on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS - TVH installed via the Ubuntu software installer app. The first recordings were made and play no problem
The default recording system path given on the Configuration-Recording page expert view is "/root/snap/tvheadend/152" (I'm assuming that's were TVH is placing the recordings?). If I brows to that location I do not see any recording files I recognise (show hidden files is ticked). I tried changing the path to my home directory and recordings I try to make now fail. I noticed /snap/ in the default path. I googled Snap and found Snapcraft Is this something else I've now got to learn in order to put recording somewhere I know how to handle them or what? I just want to get my recordings made to my NAS

Contact the maintainer of whatever package you installed there. They are the right person to ask for Support if you're using non official builds as nobody else knows what they changed.

Hi thanks for swift reply
Where would I source an official build, I didn't realise this one wasn't
Would I download either the zip or tar from here?
https://github.com/tvheadend/tvheadend/releases
thanks
Thanks

The definition of 'official' depends on whose opinion you listen to. The important part of what Flole Systems said was 'Contact the maintainer of whatever package you installed there'.

Re 'Contact the maintainer of whatever package you installed there' .
I've no idea who that would be or how to find it out
I've done some more digging around and am currently following these APT instructions
https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend/wiki/AptRepositories
I will report back what happens.

Well, if you can tell us exactly what package you installed, from where, that would be a start?

I think only one place to get snaps. https://snapcraft.io/tvheadend
This Snap package is not maintained by the TVHeadend project. Please report issues here: https://github.com/diddlesnaps/tvheadend/issues

Thanks to all that considered my problem and took the time to reply
For the benefit of any other newbies, I learned indirectly from the above comments that I had in my ignorance installed a Snap (package?) version. I hadn't heard of Snap until now as I had always used Mint which doesn't install Snap by default it seems (good IMHO just another thing to learn)
I am now using linux Mint and installed TVH via the command line following the instructions here
https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend/wiki/AptRepositories
Starting from Usage and substituting $(lsb_release -sc) with focal - focal being the Ubuntu package base for my Mint version
This resulted in installation of version 4.2.8-36~g5bdcfd8ac and I am able to understand (mostly !) where TVH is/can place it's recordings
