Help with MegaSat 3 setup SAT>IP Server
Added by Rob Walker about 7 years ago
Hi All.
Iv been using TVHeadend for a while and get on great with it. Its been running on a wetek play box (openelec edition with kodi) fine except for it occasionally eating the file system.
Anyway I have recently bought a megasat 3 and have plugged 2 out of the 4 cables into it. (sockets 3+4 as per instructions). https://www.megasat.tv/download/6965/ All four will be used once I can get it working correctly.
I can get TVHeadend to see and tune to the new receiver but certain muxs? cant be seen on the megasat but can on the kodi box using its internal receivers.
I have swapped the cables this has made no difference, and even made sure the mux can be seen on all 4 cables using the wetek box and a humax receiver box
I'm in the UK trying to get the FreeSat feed.
The mux in question is the Channel 5 mux or 10964MHz Sym 22000 H
The megasat has very few settings in it as it seems to be just plug and play but does have a settings for
High/Low band Frequency Boundary (MHz)
LO frequency for High Band (MHz)
LO frequency for Low Band (MHz)
I have no idea if these are correct but it come like this out of the box.. I think this box is for Germany so these MAY need tweaking but I don't know what to.
Anyone got any ideas.

Hey Buddy,
I will attempt to answer this question for you as I had a massive headache getting the megasat 3 setup.
How many LNB are you adding to the server?
If you are using multiple LNB, have you changed the LNB configuration to "One use per RF" or "Quad"?
I don't think the setting you pictured is used outside of Quattro, but I might be wrong. I have never changed mine and receive Channel 5 on 10964
Have you updated the firmware of the server? The one I received was on the first revision firmware and was almost unusable.

Thanks
I only have 1 LNB. Its a sky dish with a 4 outputs. All 4 work, 2 are currently installed in the megasat 3, All 4 will be once i can get it working.
Its currently Set to QUAD. Is this wrong? See pic.
running S/W Version: 3.1.15 and did update it to this as it was quite a way back.
Still at a loss..

OK think I MAY of worked it out but dont know how to fix..
It seems any horizontal Muxes Fail. All the vertical ones seem to work or scan But i have no H Muxes that will scan successfully.
Does this seem like a powesupply problem as from looking up you use 13V for Vertical and 18V for Horizontal.
RE: Help with MegaSat 3 setup SAT>IP Server - Added by John Hanson about 7 years ago
The only thing that is confusing me is that you have 4 outputs on a sky LNB, but are only using 2. Does that mean it'll operate 2 boxes at the same time or 4? Sorry for such a basic question, but I have never used any sky equipment and use 4 uni LNBs on my sat.
My gut feeling about this is that you only need one cable attached to the RF4 connector. I'm positive SKY LNBS are just QUAD universals, so each cable should carry all the info needed. Then just rerun the network scan with the network selected in every tuner AA position. The one cable can feed all 8 tuners.
If that fails you might need to retrace the cables to get which is HL, HH, VH, VL, but I really don't think sky uses quattro LNBS.
The fact that it's failing on the horizontals does support the idea that it's confused by the second cable.
Give that a try and hopefully you'll see all 8 tuners working nicely.
Hope that helps
RE: Help with MegaSat 3 setup SAT>IP Server - Added by John Hanson about 7 years ago
Just noticed you already said it could feed four outputs, so ignore that question.
Disconnect the RF3 connection and just use the RF4 on it's own. It should run perfectly on all 8 tuners.

Its just a dish with a 4 output universal LNB from my understanding so any 1 feed can get any frequency so yes you could have 4 receivers around the house all viewing seperate channels.

From there documentation it seems you can have 1 cable but it will only display the channels on 1 mux that way so you need 4 feeds so you can have more than 1 recording.

They dont its just a universal LNB and so you can have 4 tuners on one LNB.
The fact that it's failing on the horizontals does support the idea that it's confused by the second cable.
I have tried with just one cable and get the same problem unfortunately.
Thanks for the help..
I have contacted the amazon supplier and they have linked me to this thread LOL.
RE: Help with MegaSat 3 setup SAT>IP Server - Added by Tom Burton about 7 years ago
Did you find a solution to this? I'm also trying to get Megasat SAT>IP 3 working with TVHeadend and am receiving all V but no H muxes. The dish is fine, as I'm receiving all channels on my tv that is feed by the same LNB. I've raised a support request with Megasat but am totally bemused by the problem.
Any help you can provide would be great.
RE: Help with MegaSat 3 setup SAT>IP Server - Added by Rob Walker about 7 years ago
Hi Tom.
Yes I did.. Not sure its the correct way BUT it works.
If you login to the megasat interface..
Preferences and in the LNB configuration select "One User per RF"
let it reboot and TVHeadend sees all the H muxes as well.
Just make sure in TVHeadend you change your Tuner Config to DVBS2-4 not 8 as you cant use all 8 anymore.
If you find anymore tips please let me know as their support is awfull im still waiting for a reply as well.
Cheers
Rob

Rob, you are a star. I don't care whether it is the right way or not, it works. Thanks for that; I've now got 3 working channels open in TVHeadend, which is probably more than enough. If I ever get a meaningful answer from Megasat I'll post on here.

Cheers Tom
I would not hold your breath waiting for a response. 4 weeks and I'm still waiting.
I'm going to try to go back to using QUAD as LNB then tell TVHeadend there are 2 Sat positions to see if it will do H and V frequencies.
also wondering if it a firmware upgrade that needs to be done to it.
Anyway it works for both of us now.

Hi Rob,
I realise that this is an old thread so I'm hoping you're still getting notifications on new replies.
Where did you end up on this? Your post about changing the setting to "One User per RF" fixed my problems and found me a load of the H muxes. I was so excited at the success (thanks so much, you ended quite a few days of frustration for me) that I've only just read to the end of the thread and see that you left us on a cliff-hanger where you were considering going back to quad LNB and telling TVHeadend there are 2 sat positions. Did you ever do that? I'm wondering why you were looking at other options if the initial change fixed the problem. Was there something sub-optimal about the "one user per RF" solution?
My changing the tuner config to DVBS2-4 wasn't successful by the way. Tuners #3 and #4 never saw any data so launching channels slowed down a lot because TVheadend always tried #4 and #3 first with each needing to time-out with "no data" before successfully getting a signal with #1 or #2. I switched back to only having tuners #1 and #2 enabled (each with all 4 positions active) and now all is good. My feed is from a block-of-flats distribution system that I used to have a Sky+ box connected to so I use the two previous feeds into RF3 and RF4 as recommended by the manual.
I see also that Tom (hi Tom!) says he got 3 working channels open. I'm not sure how that was possible since I only seem to be able to get Tuners #1 and #2 working. Maybe you (Tom) have a more sophisticated feed system than my dual-coax basic Sky+ (or rather used-to-be-Sky+) setup.
I'm actually not too bothered about >2 satellite tuners because I also have an HDHomerun quad Freeview tuner integrated into my TVheadend setup so with 6 tuners in total I can't imagine running out of channels provided that I don't have >2 things that I want to watch/record only available via satellite and that seems unlikely given that I only want basic Freeview/Freesat channels and most channels are available via both Freeview and Freesat. My question is more curiosity and trying to understand how all this stuff fits together and if there is a way to get more than 2 of the 8 tuners in my MegaSat 3 box working (also currently using 3.1.15 firmware which is still the latest) I might as well get maximum value for money.
I'm wondering whether I might be able to get a bit more multi-tuner action by using the Master-tuner setting in TVHeadend. As I understand it my 2 incoming feeds from the distribution system can each independently be switched into Low-H, Low-V, High-H or High-V. Perhaps if I only let tuners #1 and 2# switch LNB band and/or polarisation (i.e. be the master tuners) but activate all 6 other tuners as slaves then if I need a 3rd simultaneous satellite channel (or 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th) then any or even all of the slave tuners could be active and tune into other channels provided that those other channels where on the same frequency band and polarisation as one of the master tuners was already tuned into. (Actually, given you have to nominate a specific master tuner for each slave it would be a bit less flexible, tuners #3, #4 and #5 would need to want something on the same band/polarisation setting as tuner #1 was on and #6, #7 and #8 would be restricted to tuner #2's current frequency band and polarisation but in quite a few cases it would probably give extra usable tuners, if I've understood it properly.)

Hi Julian
Yes, I'm still getting replies.
Still running "One User per RF".. The QUAD LNB setting does not work for me and the SKY LNB.. This may be a limitation of the Sky LNB I have or just my knowledge of what to do.. So I went back to the quad setup as it worked.
Iv included screenshots for my setup and how it's working.. this is for the tuner section.
I have 1 Network (FREESAT) that all the positions (There is only 1 position) on all 4 tuners point to.
I'm not sure if there is some kind of splitter that would allow you to use the 4 tuners on your dual cable setup.
you need all four plugged in for it to work from my understanding.
"I'm wondering whether I might be able to get a bit more multi-tuner action by using the Master-tuner setting in TVHeadend. Your guess is better than mine.. I just tried a few different things in order changing 1 thing at once and then testing.. to see what worked for me or not..
I would like to be able to do 8 tuners but I don't think you can with the default LNB.
I'm running this on the SAT IP Server
H/W Version: 1.0
S/W Version: 3.1.15
MEG-8000
SAT>IP_Server_3
So same as yours..
Sorry, not much help.
How you getting on with the HDHomerun as I'm tempted to try as well.. Just to make get the few extra channels that are on Freeview. But not sure how it would work with the channel numbers/names.. Eg BBC 1 HD How do you get Freesat and Freeview BBC 1 HD to the same channel..
Iv tried with a cheap tuner and It found the muxes but seemed to want to create dup channels that were the same but on different networks.
Sorry, this is a big side tract.

Correction.
It seems my notes are not up to date...
I am using the QUAD LNB Configuration.
This works for 4 muxes on 4 different frequencies
So I'm not sure that helps at all...

RE: Help with MegaSat 3 setup SAT>IP Server - Added by Julian Somebody over 5 years ago
Many thanks Rob.
It looks as if you have a slightly different version of TVHE to me since, even on expert setting level, I have a few options such as "FE supported" missing for the top-level tuner properties. I'm running TVHE 4.2.4 which is what I think I got from the basic Raspbian repository.
I also suspect that your hardware setup might have diverged from mine now. In one of your earlier posts you said...
"I only have 1 LNB. Its a sky dish with a 4 outputs. All 4 work, 2 are currently installed in the megasat 3, All 4 will be once i can get it working."
I'm thinking that maybe by now you have connected all 4 of the LNB outputs to RF1/2/3/4 on your MegaSat 3 in which case I can see why you have a proper 4 tuner quad setup working but for me with only 2 cables coming into my flat I don't think that I'm ever going to be able to use the setup that you have since a channel could potentially be in any of 4 places (High-H, Low-H, High-V or Low-V) and with only two feeds I can't simultaneously tune to all 4 of those places, I'll only ever have access to two of them at the same time.
What I have seems to be working perfectly now thanks to your earlier "One user per RF" workaround, subject to that limitation of only two cables into my flat of course which is something that I can't realistically change (the joys of living in a flat), so I think that I'll leave well alone except maybe at some point trying my idea of enabling some of the unused MegaSat tuners slaved to the two I have active at the moment. I'll probably only even bother with that if and when I ever encounter a situation where my existing 2 satellite plus 4 Freeview tuners aren't enough to avoid a scheduling conflict and honestly I don't think that day is ever likely to come so I'm all good. I don't even feel a need to search out the dedicated TVHE repo and update my TVHE to the latest version because really everything seems to be working perfectly now.
Thanks again for all your help. This thread, and particularly your contribution to it, has been a lifesaver for me.
