Hi, i backed up var folder and recovered them to another tvh on a different synology nas.
you need to have supporting folders structured exactly the same though. I'm mostly using pipe command, so it's pretty easy for me.

I'm not sure what is not working for you, is it nothing showing up in the new tvh or things showed up does not work, or you can't even start the new tvh?
because i use synology package to start both old and new tvh, so folder, config, start up script is all exactly the same, so it's easier for me. after new tvh is installed, i rename its var folder, then copy the backed up var folder there. start tvh and everything worked, even user password and profile are all recovered.
for you, i think you may need to look at your tvh start up command. -c is the command to point to the config file. make sure you point it to the correct one.
tvheadend -f -u root *-c /usr/local/tvheadend-testing/var*
