TVHeadend - HDHomeRun Prime - OpenELEC (RPi2) Can't find US Cable Channels
Added by Paul Ross over 8 years ago
I cannot seem to get TVHeadend to find my cable channels
Configuration:
Raspberry PI 2
HDHomerun Prime (HDHR3-CC w/firmware 20150826) connected to Ethernet
Connected to cable - no cable card needed - channels unencrypted
HTS Tvheadend 4.0.8 ~ OpenELEC Tvh-addon v6.0.4 (from unofficial)
OpenELEC 6.0.3
Location - United States (Antietam Cable)
The HDHR is working fine. I can watch Live TV on iPad on same network and using OE if I have the HDHR add-on installed/enabled. When I had HDHR Add-on enabled, I could not see the HDHR tuner in TVHeadend. I disabled HDHR add-on and I could see the tuner in TVHeadend. Also I did not need to install any drivers to see Live tv.
I open TVHeadend in browser <ip address>:9981
Configuration - DVB Inputs under TV Adapter tree I see:
TV Adapters
|__HDHomeRun (1322C3FC) - IP address
|__ HDHomeRun DVB-C Tuner #0 (Ip address)
|__ HDHomeRun DVB-C Tuner #1 (Ip address)
|__ HDHomeRun DVB-C Tuner #2 (Ip address)
Made sure all three tuners were Enabled. So far all okay...however, when I try to setup Network is where I start having issues
I select the Network tab then select +Add...for type I select DVB-C, give it a name,
Check Network Discovery, Skip Initial Scan
Uncheck Service ID, Ignore Provider, Idle Scan Muxes
I don't select any Pre-defined Muxes because they are all outside US
At this point I'm stuck. I get no channels mapped and 0 for # muxes (even after forced scan)
Is DVB-C correct for US cable?
Is there a pre-defined mix for US Cable?
Any help/comments on steps I am using?

I am trying to get the tvheadend backend running on a Raspberry PI 3 that is running OSMC. I also have a HDHomeRun Prime with the same firmware. I am not having much luck so far but my understanding is that the correct network type for the US is ATSC and the predefined MUX you should use is us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB. When I configure the network that way I get something like 81 Muxes with 148 services but I get continuity errors when mapping the services.

I initially used ATSC and had no luck either. I then looked up ATSC and thought it was for over the air not for cable provider. I could be wrong but here's what I read on Wikipedia..."An ATSC tuner works by generating audio and video signals that are picked up from over-the-air broadcast television"
Additionally my cable company is qam256...8VSB I believe is also for over the air signals not cable...again, I'm not an expert and these are things I found in trying to get mine to work.

Most of the posts that I have been using to attempt to get this working are from people using over the air signals but I haven't seen anyone mention anything other than ATSC. As well the only predefined muxes for the US seem to be for ATSC networks. I have this all working well on a Windows 7 HTPC running WMC but I am looking for a low power alternative such as the Raspberry PI. Unfortunately there are a lot of posts on the topic of installing and configuring the tvheadend backend that seem to be outdated with regard to newer linux distributions. More recent posts seem to indicate that is is simply a matter of installing tvheadend and following a few configuration steps and it will just work. I thought these instructions (https://tvheadend.org/boards/4/topics/20429) would work for me but still no luck. When you finally figure this out please post your findings.

I am in the exact same boat as you. I'm in the US and running OSMC on a Pi2 with an HDHR3-CC. We also have unencrypted cable (for the time being...encryption is coming but not yet). The HDHR works fine and I can tune to all channels using HDHomeRun View on my Windows laptop, and also through OSMC. The only issue was the random assigning of channel numbers. I broke down last week and picked up a cable card. I now get all of the channel and guide info through the HDHomeRun View app and through OSMC and it is working rather well, though tends to stutter on HD channels but I'm not even worried about that at this point.
I still can't get tvheadend to scan the channels. I have tried both DVB-C and ATSC as the network type. In DVB-C mode it asks for frequency....I have no idea what to put in that field. In ATSC the only pre-defind mux that finds anything is the us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB one, but everything fails with "scan no data, failed" in the log. I was also under the impression that ATSC is for over the air signals, so I have a feeling that is why I am not picking anything up when setting that as the type. I just have no idea what frequencies to enter for DVB-C since there are no US pre-defined muxes listed.
I'm not sure what else to try. Luckily, there isn't a ton I wish to record and everything that we do want to record we are able to watch online with TV Everywhere. The main reason I want it is so that I can transfer the files to take along when we are traveling and don't have access to wifi.
Most of my Googling seems to have turned up outdated info that doesn't even apply anymore, so if anyone knows of anything else to try it would be greatly appreciated!
