Dual tuner not really usable
Added by Süheyl Karakas over 8 years ago
I have a Digital Devices Cine CT V6 dual tuner card and use Tvheadend with KODI as frontend.
When I try to watch TV and record something at the same time or record two different things at the same time, it doesn't work.
On screen I get a message, no adapter available. I tried several things, the latest idea was to create an extra network and assign one of the adapters to that new network.
The second service got it own set of muxes and services. Is it possible to get this right?
Maybe a flag in the EPG which tuner it is used so you can schedule things at different tuners?
Or assign a tuner to KODI and a tuner to recording?

tvheadend should already handle this for you nicely.
i have 4 tuners over 2 cards and tvheadend will automatically choose a free tuner for recordings etc.
all you have to do is create the one network for your area then assign both tuners to that network and make sure both tuners are enable.
Have alook at your status tab and see what the tuners are tuned into when when it says no free adapter, that should help you see whats happening.

Hi Rob,
Thank you, but I already tried that. My configuration is exactly how you describe it. One network (in my case Ziggo), two tuners assigned to Ziggo network and both enabled.
For example, when I'm watching TV and I schedule something at the same time, Tvheadend cuts my tv signal and take that tuner to record. And when it's recording I can't watch anything else.

As Rob has already said Tvheadend should handle this no problem, what I think is happening is Tvheadend sees that tuner A is busy so tries tuner B but it fails and because recordings are higher priority it will steal tuner A for the recording.
Open the system panel (that bar at the bottom of the webui, click the arrow to keep it open) then using two vlc instances try playing two channels (both on different muxes/frequencies) and watch the output, it should give you some idea as to what's going on.

Somehow the problem solved itself. I'm not getting messages anymore and can watch and record at the same time again.
Thanx anyhow!

I think it's a random problem.
For exemple, it's possible both tuners are busy, one by your channel stream (kodi) and second by epg grabber.
If the problem solved itseld, that's because when you just launched tvheadend, grabber absolutely wants update. After a few minutes, that's fine, and your tuners are released.
It's easy to verify, just restart tvh and test immediately 2 channels, on different frequencies. You can check subscribed streams (included grabber) in tvh status.
If it happens, try to disable initial grabber scan and modify crontab for it.

I don't agree with this, as tvheadend runs always. My HTPC is never turned, sometimes a reboot. But is it possible that the grabber runs more then once a day?

My OTA grabber run 4 time in one day, so yes, write this in the Over-the-air Grabber field, for example:
4 1 * * *
4 7 * * *
4 13 * * *
4 19 * * *

Ah thnx, I think that was the issue. One of the schedules was set on a time I usually start recording. Scheduled it now just once a day.

FWIW: OTA Grabbers are problematic. If you have a good source for XMLTV in your country, I suggest using that instead.

Why OTA grabbers are problematic? I never had problems with my 138 channels. Can you explain please? Thank you.

I guess it depends on how many tuners you have and when you grab, but to grab, you need to tune to the channel/mux where EPG is transmitted. Some operators send EPG on all muxes, some only on one. If you have only one tuner, it might end up being occupied when needed for other stuff.
