Problems with setup on OpenELEC with HDHomerun
Added by Allen Mueller over 9 years ago
Running Tvheadend 3.9 backed and I cannot get it to scan for networks. I can get the HDHomerun Dual to pick up networks using my PC so I know that it works and is connected right.
I followed some tutorial I found online for the following setting screens. I am trying to pick up antenna signals in the US. Can anyone help me out and spot something wrong? It will not scan for any networks. The TV Adapters menu has 4 adapters listed for some reason, even though the HDHomerun only has 2 tuners. I have tried enabling them all.

Have you tried using the other adapters? [the ones that begin with /dev/dvb/adapter<n>/]

I tried the ones with the card symbols. Not sure what the difference is between those up above and those down below (the HDHomerun Dual only has 2 tuners, not 4) but I have tried them all with no luck. I think the problem may be in my network or muxes settings but I have no idea where to start.

Hi,
I am in the same boat. Here is what I know:
From what I understand, you'll have to find out which frequency your cable provider uses for the mux in your area. I'm not sure where to find this though.
Is there some list for this somewhere? Isn't this provided by the FCC?
Ive looked all over and haven't found anything official. Anyways, I found a random post by a dude on the TWC forum and he listed a bunch of frequencies (105, 111, 117, 123). I tried entering these and have some channels, but not nearly as many as I get from my cable card.
Am I close?
Also, what do we want to use for a cable TV connection which gets HD channels? ATSC or DVB-C?
Another problem I am facing, is in OpenElec. I have the hdHomerun driver installed (since its included as an add-on, along with tvheadend backend) but I cannot get OpenElec nor the tvheadend front end to see my backend. What am I missing here?
Hopefully, we have the same problems and someone can point us in the right direction. Thank you anyone for any help you can provide.
I would be happy to compile a document or a youtube video walk-through on how to do this. There seems to be many people looking to do this but a shortage of good/updated answers.
Thanks again,

the best point i can make:
1. WMC (windows media center) does it all,
- finds both tuners HDHR3-US and HDHR3-CC
- the only input is zip code (us) and choose the provider from a list.
- and works perfectly (after i got cable company to properly pair tuning adapter, unrelated snafu)
2. tivo (cablecard) is the same. works perfectly without any effort.
3. so when is somebody going to figure out the secret and provide the trick for tvheadend? my goal is to get the htpc on the <$100 box and run openelec.

1) Get rid of the hacky dvb hdhomerun driver crap. You don't need it with 3.9. That will get rid of the /dev/dvb/... entries.
2) In networks, create a network with Pre-Defined Muxes set to: United States: us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB
3) Enable tuner 0 and pick the network you created in step #2 and then click save. Do the same for tuner 1.
4) Wait a minute for the scanner to start scanning all the muxes created in step #2.
5) After the scan is complete, Services should have a bunch of stuff populated. Click Map All.
6) Wait for the mapping to complete (the dialogue box won't actually go away, so either check the log or make sure Status -> Stream stays empty)
7) Setup EPG

Hi Ben de Boer Fennema,
I'm running HTS Tvheadend 3.9.2679~g995aaf8 but I've not been successful interpreting the steps properly. I think my problem is in step 3 though I can't figure out how to connect the tuners. Here are my current steps attempting to follow along.
This is the command to start tvheadend:
./build.linux/tvheadend --noacl
Step 1:
I'm not using dvd hdhomerun driver. I did install libhdhomerun. Seems to be working:
./hdhomerun_config discover
hdhomerun device 1051228C found at 192.168.1.161
Step 2:
Configuration->DVB Inputs->Network +Add
Set Type to ATSC Network (I'm in the US)
Entered a network name
Set Pre-defined Muxes to us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB
Clicked +Creaate
Step 3:
Enable tuner 0 and pick the network you created in step #2 and then click save. Do the same for tuner 1
Where are the tuners enabled?
Step 4:
Under Configuration->DVB Inputs->Muxes I know have a bunch of discovered channels that look roughly correct
Step 5:
After the scan is complete, Services should have a bunch of stuff populated. Click Map All.
I see many entries under Configuration-> DVB Inputs->Mux but nothing under Services.
In Services I click Map All
In the dialog box I click Check availability, Merge same name, Create provider then Click Map
Thanks!
Tim

Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> TV adapters
Should look something like:
TV Adapters
HDHomeRun(XXXXXXXX) - 1.2.3.4
HDHomeRun ATSC Tuner #0 (1.2.3.4)
HDHomeRun ATSC Tuner #1 (1.2.3.4)
Then if you select one of the tuners, on the right you should see:
Enabled: [ ]
Name: HDHomeRun ATSC Tuner #0 (1.2.3.4)
Over-the-air EPG:
Networks:
Here is where you need to Enable and Select the Network.
IF It doesn't say ATSC (DVB-T or DVB-C), click on the HDHomeRun(XXXXXXXX) entry and you should get a Network Type: entry on the right. Switch that to ATSC and click save and then it should switch the other entries to ATSC.

Thanks Ben!
I think my problem is configuring tvheadheadend. Based on:
http://hezik.nl/how-to-hdhomerun-4dc-hdhr3-4dc-tvheadend-on-raspberry-pi-2b/
I configured the build with:
./configure --enable-hdhomerun_client --enable-hdhomerun_static --enable-bundle
Does that seem correct?
I don't see anything under TV adapters even after make-ing with the above configure.
Thanks again for your help.

If your building with --eanble-hdhomerun_static you shouldn't actually need to download and install libhdhomerun (it should do it automatically)
In the tvheadend startup messages, do you see anything from tvhdhomerun?
Should look like:
2015-04-07 23:59:14.514 [ INFO] tvhdhomerun: Found HDHomerun device 1051228c with 2 tuners
2015-04-07 23:59:14.535 [ INFO] tvheadend: Using Network type : ATSC
2015-04-07 23:59:14.535 [ INFO] tvhdhomerun: Created frontend 1051228c tuner 0
2015-04-07 23:59:14.535 [ INFO] tvhdhomerun: Created frontend 1051228c tuner 1
When you run configure do you get:
...
hdhomerun_client yes
hdhomerun_static yes
?
Any firewall running?
Ben

Ben,
Thanks again for your assistance.
Through some combination of make clean and deleting some cruft I'm am working just fine. Your debugging/logging steps were very helpful.
My next adventure is getting Schedules Direct EPG to work.
