STEP by STEP tutorial for new version 3.9

Added by Scott dude almost 10 years ago

Hi,

I'm looking for a step by step tutorial from version 3.9 onwards as there have been a lot of changes to the web interface set-up vs. older 3.4 versions.

I've searched on the forums and only saw "it's now a one to many relationship, that's the short form".

I really appreciate all of the hard work that went into this, but the answer above doesn't really help the average user. In my opinion, it's like most things, once you've done it a trillion times it's easy, but the first time is usually a little bit (or a lot) difficult.

Thanks for any help.

As the interface stops changing, I'm sure folks will document it, but I tried updating the help files previously and they immediately went 'stale' as more code was added.

That quote sounds like one of mine, so I'll volunteer here to help!

1. Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> Networks

Create a network of the appropriate type here. You can have multiple networks of the same type, e.g. I have two DVB-T networks defined: one with HD muxes, one without, because one of my tuners doesn't support HD H.264.

2. Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> TV Adapters

Associate each of your tuners with the correct network. So, on mine, I have the HD DVB-T2 networks defined in Basic Settings -> Network on my HD tuners, but I have the SD network on the SD tuner and I have a DVB-S2 associated with my satellite tuners.

At this point, your tuners now know what networks to use: one network can appear on multiple tuners (many-to-one), and one tuner can have multiple networks.

3. Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> Muxes

This is where you'd manually add muxes or find the pre-defined ones you selected in step (1) - much like 3.4 at this point.

4. Configuration -> DVB Inputs -> Services

And this is where the services will appear as your tuners tune to the muxes based on the network you told them to look on.

That should get you started... keep an eye on check boxes to make sure you Network Discovery enabled on the networks (for example)... many of the options you'll see will be familiar from 3.4 and previous, they're just in different places.

Hi,

Could someone mark this thread as sticky?

I had a lot of difficulties moving from 3.4 to 3.9.

I was writing a shout for help, during which I made it work. ;)
In case it helps anybody. My steps were these:

- "folder above DVB adapter": Enabled, Satconfig Universal
- Networks: Add network, enable "Network Discovery", disable "skip initial scan"
- Networks: add predefined muxes for your SAT or provider, this seems to create an entry in "Muxes"
- DVB Adapter: select the network you created

btw, it's running on OpenElec 5.0.1 on my Wetek.play device.

Setting up TVH actually is a little bit complicated and not very self-explanatory.
For example I never ever encountered words like "Network" or "Service" in the sense it is used in TVH.
While it's perfectly valid, for the newbie it needs a little bit of explanation of the dependencies between Network, Mux, Service and Channel.

A solution would either be a setup wizard or an article in wiki.
Maybe I write one. Any suggestions for the title?

thanks

Jan

Thanks for your help. I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

I'm still using my Enigma2 receiver for now. The channel list on TVHeadend is too time consuming to sort.

Another question...does the TVHead edit program work on Linux or only Windows? (I use Linux on my laptop and PC)

Thanks.

H,

Could enigma2 dvb s tuners be used as network tuner for tvheadend?

Many thanks

Keep in mind the following: I am not a developer. I have never worked with linux in any way and have just bought a Synology Diskstation. I want to record directly to my diskstation from my network tuner HDHomeRun to keep my windows 7 pc out of the loop of my tv recording process (since I have family members who keep rebooting during my recordings:).

So, I find this application on the synology community and have installed it. But when I open it in my browser and go to configuration, I don't have an option for network? My tuner does not show under the adapters...

Please provide detailed step by step to get this setup - including what additional packages I may need to install on my diskstation and how to use those in order to get TVhead to work!

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe you should ask in the synology community?
I attached a USB-DVB-S reciever to my nas. But I use a plain debian and self-built kernel instead of the stock os. DVB-S did not really work because of a bad driver. Is the synologie ARM or x86?
btw, you should open a new thread. Your question is misplaced in this topic.

I have Tvheadend 3.9.2825~gae281c9 with a DVB-T device with two tuners and this is recognized by Tvheadend with 2 adapters, OK.

So now, which should be the configuration to be made in (Tvheadend -> DVB Inputs) in order to use the two adapters simultaneously and send several streams from different muxes?

Thanks

RE: STEP by STEP tutorial for new version 3.9 - Added by Prof Yaffle over 9 years ago

@Nicolas Rioja - There's no special configuration needed - they're independent tuners, and will behave as such since they can independently lock onto a different bit of the broadcast spectrum and decode the signal. It's a little different with satellite, in that you need one LNB for each parallel/concurrent stream from a different part of the spectrum (different space segment).

Anyway, once you have the tuners, simply associate each of them with the same Network. Your Network (e.g. "Terrestrial") carries Muxes (e.g. "580MHz" - the old analogue channels, now used as carrier frequencies), each Mux carries Services and tvheadend then maps these to Channels that you request. When you ask to watch something, tvheadend simplistically works backwards from channel to service to mux to network to tuner to find something that's available to receive the signal and thus provide you with what you asked for.

Does that help?

@Lisa W - check if your tuner is visible under SYnology's video app (VideoStation, I think?). If it isn't, your tuner isn't supported and there's nothing tvh can do about that; if it is, then it used to be the case that you needed to load the Synology video app anyway as that's the software that loads the drivers and tuner support that tvheadend can then use. It's been a long time since I looked, though.

I followed the above and now have the TV tab in Kodi with 9 local television channels listed. I have audio but NO VIDEO. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks, Prof Yaffle. Yes that helps... but my question was in the direction of how to configure Tvheadend in order to use both adapters automatically. I was missing to enable the option Linked Input (Configuration > DVB Inputs > TV adapters > Parameters...) in order to link the adapters to each other.

Now it works as I want.

I'm a total newb here, but have got an HDHomeRun and OpenELEC. TVHeadEnd recognizes my tuners, but when I go to add a network there are no pre-defined muxes showing for the US. If I manually create the network nothing happens. No scanning of channels or anything. Am I missing something???
