Tvheadend on O2 Joggler (running ubuntu)

Added by Oliver Thomas over 10 years ago

I'm planning on turning a O2 Joggler into a Tvheadend server/back end.

This is a intel atom based device with an inbuilt touchscreen, which is mains powered and features 1x USB port and 1x Ethernet 100mbit LAN connection.

It is possible to install ubuntu/xubuntu on the device - I'm planning on using a usb stick to run the OS.

Hopefully I will be able to plug the following devices into a usb hub and share tv over my network:

2x DVB-T tuners (may change to DVB-T2 later)
1x usb hdd (for storing recordings)
1x usb stick (for ubuntu)

My only question is whether anyone thinks the usb hub will become saturated - recording (at worst) 2x HD streams and running the OS.

Also is a 100mbit Ethernet suitable to streaming (at worst) 2x HD streams?

Hopefully, if none of these issues are a problem, this will be an ideal low-power silent back end server!

I've posted a question about this on the Jogggler forum here:

Also - does anyone have any tips or advice on which type of file system is best on the hdd to be used for storing recordings (possibly timeshift buffer as well)?

Would ext3 or ext4 be suitable? Or is anything else better for these purposes?

Having owned an o2 joggler a few years ago when they were available for £49.99 and messing around with linux etc. I came to the conclusion it is whoefully underpowered and basically an interesting tinkerers toy but purely because it was £50 and had an x86 cpu and a touchscreen. In terms of actual use it was next to useless. (just giving background that I did actually own one and not condemning on principle of nothing).

Throw it away, they are a usless piece of junk. Not a chance it will be able to broadcast 2 streams over IP and record at same time etc without stuttering.
100mbit network won't be a problem, HD streams are at most around 20mbit these days peak bitrate.

I don't believe even a minimal headless ubuntu installation running tvheadend will producer useable results with a 2w TDP CPU from 6 years ago.

Realize this is all unsubstantiated ;) but pretty sure it's close enough to the truth. I suppose the proof is in the pudding, and doing a google doesn't yield any results of people achiveing any kind of DVB setup on this box and it's been around long enough for everything to have been tried, passmark is coming up at 220 average.

I dunno....would be very interested to see if this does work out though, doubtful :)

Well I can't comment on HD streams, as the only DVB-T2 device I own (a Geniatech T220A), is not yet supported by Linux.

However I now have my Joggler setup as intended:

1x usb hub with the following connected:
- 1x 16GB usb drive for Xubuntu OS
- 2x Hauppauge DVB-T sticks
- 1x 500gb usb HDD for recordings (formatted as ext4)

It handles my requirements perfectly. I've given it a few stress tests such as:

Making 2x simultaneous recordings (from separate tuners), while also:
Playing back 2x previous recordings, while also:
Streaming another channel (live) from a matching mux to one of the recordings

It did all of this simultaneously, without any issues, and seems to be working just as I'd hoped!

I've also streamed live tv to approx 4-5 different devices without any issues. Time shifting also appears to work ok, when using the alternative pvr.tvh add on with openelec.

I also discovered the Joggler apparently has gigabit LAN, not 100mbit!

I would say this box is definitely NOT junk :-)

I've posted updates about this on the Joggler forum (linked to above, in the 1st post).

This is my 2nd Joggler. The other is permanently setup to be used as a touchscreen squeezebox interface/controller.

The Joggler forum is very active and people seem to have many uses for them, so I wouldn't write them off. They are also virtually impossible to brick - it's fairly straightforward to bring one back from appearing dead.

If a DVB-T2 driver/support is added for my Geniatech USB stick I will try to post an update regarding HD on the Joggler.
