Bad picture breakup on live TV

Added by John Aldridge over 1 year ago

Strange one here...

I'm running tvheadend 4.2.8-34~g24a2f59e9 on a Raspberry Pi 4 (running Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)) with a Raspberry Pi TV HAT, connected by gigabit ethernet to a Windows 10 PC running Kodi 20.0 (20.0.0).

If I watch the "Tour De France Live" coverage on ITV4 during the afternoon, live, then I get very bad blocky picture (see attachment), enough to make it almost unwatchable.

If instead I set a recording going, and then start watching that recording 15 seconds later, the picture is perfectly good.

I have not noticed the problem on any other programme or channel.

Any ideas?

Check your antenna connector both at the HAT end and all the way along. Ensure that your antenna is situated to maximise the signal. Try retuning too.

Also perhaps worth trying a different program for viewing, ideally on a different computer.

So programs on other channels on the same multiplex at the same time are fine? Does this happen on multiple days?

If the problem was the antenna or tuning, wouldn't that affect both live viewing and recording?

I'll check other channels on the same multiplex, and also try another viewing program, when I'm next at home during the afternoon.

Thanks for your suggestions!
John

The Pi TV HAT can display some weird symptoms including what yours is suffering from. Try what I advised one user here that worked albeit a different issue https://tvheadend.org/boards/5/topics/49905

You'd think so, but the error correction may be different for the live and recorded paths (more time to do more on the recording?) so that might give different results.

Other channels on the same multiplex seem fine.

Interestingly, Windows Media Player is fine too. I even had both Kodi and WMP playing the live programme at the same same time, and only Kodi suffered from breakup.
It is noticeable that the problem is most severe when the picture is "busy" (e.g. showing a closeup of several cyclists pedalling at once).

I guess I should probably try discussing this on a Kodi forum instead of this one!

Cheers,
John

Thanks for the update, and yes you might have more luck finding an answer elsewhere. I'd be interested to know the answer if you do find one. :)

Typical symptoms of a bad signal. Are you playing this in TVH or some other front end.

RE: Bad picture breakup on live TV - Added by Jonas Lang about 1 year ago

Disable Idle Scan and see if that helps.

RE: Bad picture breakup on live TV - Added by saen acro about 1 year ago

Enable LNA
and see in status signal levels
/If no signal show enable Force old status/

If signal is less then 50% or more then -60dBm you have signal problem
