Cardless IPTV?

Added by BoB The Cherub over 7 years ago

Hi,

I have been investigating the IPTV feeds from my network provider. Using wireshark, I have managed to determine the IP multicast address and port, and can now successfully receive a feed using VLC. While the stream is played by VLC, the image and audio is scrambled. I am assuming this means that the network is using some sort of scrambling on their IPTV feeds.

I have checked the set-top box, but I can see nowhere where a smartcard or USB device can be inserted. Does this mean the network is most likely using some sort of cardless scrambling scheme? And if this is the case, do I have no hope of descrambling the channels?

Thanks

This sounds exactly like what BT (here in the UK) do with their BT TV service. If it's anything like BT TV it'll be using something like Marlin DRM. In the case of Marlin, the box basically gets a license from a remote system to unstramble the streams.

Verimatrix most probably, stb have internal certificate for descrambling
or simple AES
