EPG for BBC Radio on Freesat [SOLVED]

Added by Nick Sillito over 1 year ago

Im running TVheadend 4.3-2024~g420786927 and have a SATIP box pointing at the Astra / Freesat saterlights.

The BBC recently moved some of thier frequecies around and I ended up retuning all my BBC radio stations to the new frequencies (eg BBC R1 to UK/10803H/BBC R1). I can recieve the radio broadcast, but I've stopped getting the OTA freesat EPG (the only internal grabber I have enabled is the OTA UK:Freesat). Before the frequencies changed, the EPG worked fine. The EPG continues to work fine for non-BBC radio (eg talkSPORT).

Have I done something wrong or is it the BBC's fault?

Try manually scanning 11464 H. Also try manually scanning any other satellites that BBC Radio is broadcast on. See if that yields anything.

Many thanks. If I go to the DVB Input tab, I dont have a 11464H mux (is this the problem), but I have got a 11464.25H mux -- is this what I should be scanning?

Also -- how do I do a "manual scan" -- do I change "EPG Scan" to "Manual Selection" on the DVB Input > Muxes tab for 11464.25H tab or do I set it as a cron style job on DVB Input > Mux Schedulers tab (or something else)?

That’s the one. 11464.25 H. Click on that mux, go to the Edit tab, select Idle drop-down and change to Active and select Save. Once Active changes to Idle the scan is complete. Experiment with any other muxes that broadcast BBC services. Make sure your EPG grabbers are configured correctly too.

So I think that I've done all of that ok, and I am still not getting any EPG on BBC radio (actually, any BBC stations but I use XMLTV for the TV broadcast anyway). I've also updated to the latest (4.3-2112) build of tvheadend which didnt help either.

I think that my config of the OTA grapped is correct. The only grabber modules selected are xmltv (prioritoy 3) and "Over the Air: UK Freeset" (prioritoy 1).

Any more ideas would be great (even just someone confirming that they can get the OTA EPG for BBC would be helpful)

I just fired up a test box with Tvheadend which hasn't been used since last year and initially, like you, found no BBC radio channels though the commercial ones were there. Rescanning the muxes and tidying up the defunct services there was still no radio EPG. However after stopping Tvheadend, deleting the epgdb.v3 file (/home/hts/.hts/tvheadend/epgdb.v3) and restarting, a scan of 11425H (the correct FreeSat EPG mux) gives me the radio channels.

One slight difference to your setup; I have both "UK: Freesat" and "UK: Freesat (EPG)" grabbers enabled. I don't know if this is important.

Knowing what hardware/OS/tuner you’re using would help. You have a perfectly good 7 day EPG built in to the EPG grabbers. No need for external sources. You need to configure them correctly and in the correct order of priority so you fill the complete channel list.

Anyway as suggested reconfigure your setup. btw I answered as I am receiving epg for BBC Radio. I wouldn’t have answered otherwise.

Im running on a PC (Ryzen 1700X) 4GB RAM using Ubuntu 22.04. I have a Triax SATIP converter running firmward 0.5.32D. Will try the suggestions tomorrow (many thanks!)

That Triax Sat/IP tuner gives you plenty of flexibility on what hardware you can use. Not sure if you’ve tried LibreELEC but I have it, a Sat/IP tuner and TVH running on a Raspberry Pi3b and the Kodi frontend works very well as an integrated PVR. Recording works perfectly with schedules and full 7 day epg for both TV and radio. All fitted into a neat little box tucked away running 24/7 and very cost effective energy wise.

Finally managed to solve it -- thanks for all the advice.
The BBC radio stations were showing on mux 10803H. I deleted this mux and rescanned. mux 10803H wasn't detected, but 10802.75H was detected. This mux carried all the BBC radio stations. I remapped the stations and the EPG works fine.

That’s why you’re better off starting with a blank muxes screen, don’t add the predefined muxes, add one known working mux yourself and let TVH discover the remainder automatically.

The predefined mux table for Astra 28.2 is way out of date showing 120 muxes instead of the 71 muxes that are actually receivable in the UK on a standard setup. I’d recommend doing that to clear out any chance of scanned duplicate muxes.
