Channel sorting

Added by Bernhard Berger about 5 years ago

// removed some rant

I have around 150-200 channels I need to categorise into groups (okay, the Tag mass edit feature is somewhat usable) but it feels outright impossible to organize the channels within those groups.

Editing 200 channel numbers one by one by hand is one of the worst experiences I have ever seen and I now have given up after about 3 hours or so..

A channel ordering tab with up and down arrows would come a very, very, very, very long way.. Better however would be to have a sorting index inside tags.

I need to create profiles/channel groups for myself, my mum living next door, my wife and my kids. It is impossible to organize them in any useful manner without the ability to set an order for specific tags

Is there any way I can help sponsor development for this?

// Edit2: I have chosen to take matter in my own hands now.. just would appreciate some help (infos) though, see below

I'm in the process to code some enhancements regarding channel sorting.. (hopefully they'll land in upstream when done)

While doing my research I stumbled upon some lines of code and forum entries that relate to channel numbers containing a dot, like:

11
11.1
11.2
11.3
12

I'd like to know what the semantic and/or technical purpose of that is.

Is it purely cosmetics for holding "subchannels" together in client sorting like SD for an HD programme or option channels like Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3 etc.?

Or is there some deeper lying stuff going on?

What are various clients doing with that kind if notation? Kodi ignores it and Emby I'm not sure can even handle it.
