Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux

Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

I have tried for the last two weeks to get a Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual functional.
It must be possible as I read in the forums but till now I don't get it done.
I run a TVHeadend in a Arch Linux computer with kernel 4.19.8-arch1-1-ARCH.
On the same server is a Mystique SaTiX-S2 Sky V2 USB reciever which is functioning correctly.

The Terratec card is detected with lsusb

[rob@mediacenter:~]$ lsusb |grep -i terra (12-12 18:43)

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 153b:1182 TerraTec Electronic GmbH Cinergy S2 PCIe Dual Port 2
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 153b:1181 TerraTec Electronic GmbH Cinergy S2 PCIe Dual Port 1

With dmesg it is also visible but there is no action

[rob@mediacenter:~]$ dmesg |grep -i Terra (12-12 18:43)

As you can see "dmesg |grep -i dvb" only shows my working USB reciever.

All the success story's with the Terratec cards ends with using the media_build of CrazyCat but for me that hasn't worked yet.
I think you have to complete the command "./build --git https://github.com/crazycat69/linux_media latest" to get it work but https://github.com/crazycat69/linux_media does not exist anymore.
Without the url or with --main-git the build and the installation goes well, no warnings, but the card is still not recognized and usable.

Can someone help me out with this?

Short and more productive command

dmesg |egrep "firmware|dvb|frontend"

also
tree /dev/dvb

post results

Keep in mind, without frontend there is nothing to be do.

Second tuner is missing?

https://tvheadend.org/boards/5/topics/8884?r=8933

it is more as this one
https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TeVii_S482

Can you make difference bitwin PCIe and USB tuner
post photo of tuner.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

The Terratec is a PCIe card with two sat inputs which shows itself as two USB devices with lsusb.
The Mystique SaTiX-S2 Sky is a external USB tuner with one sat input.

restart without external tuner
and post results

dmesg |egrep "firmware|dvb|frontend|usb"

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

"dmesg |grep dvbdev" gives no output.

I think the solution is at https://www.easy-vdr.de/thread-18362.html but it goes wrong with "./build --git https://github.com/crazycat69/linux_media latest" because of the non existing url. (at least it did in april this year)
"git clone https://bitbucket.org/CrazyCat/media_build.git" still works and looks maintained.
I can build and install it (without the github url) but it doesn't make my receiver functional.
There is a linux-media-LATEST to download but I don't know how to implement it.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Dave H almost 6 years ago

Crazycat maintains the open-source drivers for TBS cards so I think can reasonably be trusted. At bitbucket there's a linux-media repository https://bitbucket.org/CrazyCat/linux_media/overview so I'd suggest downloading that and reading the documentation. If you need help and there's no contact information for crazycat specifically for your card/brand then I suggest contacting him using any available contact information (e.g. tbs if no other) and ask for a pointer to help.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

I have followed the instructions in the overview but it didn't work for me.
I could build and install the drivers but it delivers no working Terratec tuner.
That's why I have searched the forums for hints. I'm stuck at the moment.
I wil try to get in contact with crazycat.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by saen acro almost 6 years ago

Do you remove media branch in kernel folder before install new drivers?

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

No I didn't, could that make the differense?
I will try that tonight and report the result.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Dave H almost 6 years ago

Yes, that will stop it working. I'm not sure but I think you have to get rid of the old tree before building, rather than just before installing.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

Now we coming somewhwere.
I did:
sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media/*
git clone https://bitbucket.org/CrazyCat/media_build.git
cd media_build
./build
sudo make install
sudo make clean
sudo shutdown -r now

In that proces I lost my external USB reciever, for that I need the kernel drivers >4.19.2 which are probably overwritten.
But TVHeadend found two new recievers "Montage Technology DS3000/TS2020 #0 : DVB-S #0" and "Montage Technology DS3000/TS2020 #1 : DVB-S #0" which I can configure.
That looks hopefull but I got no picture from both adapters.
The SNR is +- 75%, and green, but the signal strength is between 0-56%. To week to create a image.

There is some progress but for now my mediacenter is useless for watching television

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

I had some trouble getting my external tuner back in the system but he is there again but also on that tuner no image.
I have copied the dvb-fe-ds3103.fw but it looks like its the same as there was already there.
There is something odd with the sequence of the tuners, in TVHeadend the are presented as "Montage Technology DS3000/TS2020 #0 : DVB-S #0",
"Montage Technology M88DS3103 #1 : DVB-S #0" and "Montage Technology DS3000/TS2020 #2 : DVB-S #0".
The external tuner looks like to be in the middle of the tuners on the PCIe card.
Both tuners seems to use the same firmware but with little succes.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by saen acro almost 6 years ago

Do not believe 100% on signal values
use parallel femon during scan.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

It is not that I believe in the exact value of the signal but at the moment the result is that I don't have a functional tuner.
It did worked before, the external tuner, so now there is something wrong.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by saen acro almost 6 years ago

Update Kernel will fix problem then you can copy from current module with make internal tuner to work

Now you understand how stupid is Linux idea to put all in kernel tree and one work other to be broken from old to new kernel
mutch better idea is to use PID VID modules aka per device
good example digital devices modules

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

I'm not sure if I know what you mean with "copy from current module with make internal tuner to work"
I can go back to the situation that my externe tuner works (I think :-)) but which files do I need to copy? (from where to where?)

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by saen acro almost 6 years ago

lsusb && lsusb -t

to see modules used
corresponding to bus port etc.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

I didn't manage to find and copy the right driver for the Terratec so in the process I lost the earlier compiled driver when I reinstalled the kernel.
Sadly I can not reproduce my earlier mentioned driver build for the Terratec so I am back at the start with only a working external USB tuner.
That tuner works now with the build of crazycat in which I manually copied the "latest files".
I have no clue how to go further. I'm sure it can be done but I am stuck at the moment.

RE: Problem with getting Terratec Cinergy S2 PCIe dual installed on Arch Linux - Added by Rob Thorborg almost 6 years ago

I made a new build without manually copying the latest drivers in the created build and after compiling the external tuner stays functional.
Strange, that wasn't at first.
I looked in to dw2102.c and the USB ID in there is correct. Why don't the driver start?

It's look's like I'm going from bad to worse.
I'm not being able to build the crazycat media_build anymore.
I reinstalled the kernel and now getting this problem.
