Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic
Added by Max Max over 6 years ago
Hey there!
Has anyone managed to install tvheadend on Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) via package management?
I tried the official way but it seems its not working, I already opened a ticket for this:
https://tvheadend.org/issues/5091
In the meantime, Im looking for alternatives, as I have some free time this week so I'd like to proceed with my build/install, so any hints appreciated
Also, can I compile tvheadend myself, and later replace with .deb package once they are available, or will that leave all sorts of residue on my disks?
Many thanks, Max

Hey,
answering my own question in case anybody else needs a build for bionic. I found a 3rd party repo that worked great for me:
https://launchpad.net/~mamarley/+archive/ubuntu/tvheadend-git-stable
Will switch to official once build probs are resolved.

Despite the installation instructions listing also stable, I think the stable version for bionic is not in the repository yet, at least it is not listed under http://apt.tvheadend.org/stable/dists/. As of today, I saw "bionic" only under the unstable distros (http://apt.tvheadend.org/unstable/dists/)

This is my fault, I'll correct the page

Hi Mark, do you perhaps have an estimation, by when the stable version for bionic will be available from the Doozer repository? I'm eagerly waiting for it

I'll open a PR to add it in, best I can do.

Hi,
Max Max Did you get tvheadend working in Bionic?
I'm asking, because I just yesterday (10 May) updated my server to Bionic and at the same time TVH to 4.2 release.
Prior to that the same setup was running Xenial + TVH 4.0, and all was fine. Now I can't tune anything reliably. When I force the scan, muxes succeed once in a blue moon. Where I live, there are three muxes available, and not once I've managed to get all three muxes tuned.
Cheers,
Jussi

Sadly, I did not manage to get my DVB drivers setup correctly yet, so I could not test tvh reliably with Bionic yet.

In my case I am lucky...for my Digital Devices CINE S2 V7 the drivers are included in the Bionic's Kernel, the TV-Tuner worked out of the "Xubuntu box". Test wise I could install, configure and run a scan of the Astra 19.2 E Satellite with Tvheadend. Kodi has shown the couple of channels I switched to. I did all this from a Xubuntu Live USB as I wanted to test the whole "scenario" before moving from Windows/Kodi to Xubuntu/Kodi. The reaction times, whatever I did, were veeeery long, but I firmly believe these have to do with the slow USB key. Nevertheless, I prefer waiting for an official stable tvheadend version for Bionic, before changing the OS

Bit late to this thread but thought I'd add my own experiences with
18.04 in case it helps others.
I migrated from 16.04 a few weeks ago. For historical reason I build
(built) tvheadend from source but used kodi + hts pvr from the xbmc
ppa.
The last commit I built from was (4.3-262~g)8011a8c back in July 2017.
I'm currently using a Geniatech T230 I got from Amazon. It took a
while to find some firmware that worked but, after trying pretty much
every candidate I could find "out there", I found one that worked and
my setup has worked well and was really stable.
When I moved to 18.04 I tried to build the 8011a8c commit but got
problems.
I decide to focus on building the latest commit cited on the home
page - (4.3-1252~g)595fl174f - which didn't prove too hard.
That's the version I'm using right. Originally I used kodi + pvr from
the Ubuntu repos but, literally just now, switched to the xbmc ppa. (I
found initially that the Ubuntu version was more stable that the ppa
version.)
I'm using the same firmware as I used in 16.04 but have no idea as to
whether it is entirely suitable for 18.04.
The 18.04 combo has not been stable. These points reflect my
experience while using the Ubuntu repos:
I see many, many more checksum errors reported by tvheadend and kodi
often could not "tune in" to channels consistently
kodi frequently crashed immediately when I started it, I'd just retry
until it started sucessfully.
I noticed that if Kodi is running and I start playing some music,
frequently everything freezes for ~10seconds before continuing ok. (I
know there were issues with audio on 18.04; some alsa config files
were recently updated.)
I use LibreElec on a Pi talking to my 18.04 system and sometimes it
just can not tune in at all, let alone maintain a stable connection.
Its to be expected that 18.04 will not be as stable yet as 16.04: I
see crashes of e.g Chrome, nautilus frequently so I've held off trying
to dig deeper into specific tvheadend / kodi issues.
Happy to clarify / expand (where I can) if of any interest.

Guys, maybe a great information... I just saw the stable distro for bionic is now available: [[http://apt.tvheadend.org/stable/dists/]]
Cool!!! Now I need to find some time to swicth my htpc from WIN/kodi to xubuntu/kodi...
RE: Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic - Added by Paul M over 6 years ago
please can anyone weigh in on the stability of tvheadend 4.3.(latest) on Ubuntu 18.04-LTS?
I'm feeling brave about upgrading my TVH server.
thanks
RE: Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic - Added by Ian Rumford over 6 years ago
Hi Paul,
For quite a while I was building 4.3 from source using the latest "good" commit and found it quite unstable with Kodi 17.6 from the xbmc ppa.
I have retreated to 4.2 (again building from source) and found it (qualitatively) more stable although I still have issues e.g Kodi repeatedly crashing on startup.

How is TVH on Ubuntu 18.04.1-LTS looking these days?
I'm still on 16.04, and having taken so long to get a stable system, I'm rather reluctant to change for the sake of it.

Well, of course it can be different for you but my update from 16.04 to 18.04.1 really was flawless and easy....
RE: Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic - Added by Jef Bosk about 6 years ago
I kicked windows out and made a fully fresh installation of xubuntu 18.04, kodi, tvheadend. Everything went absolutely flawless on my pc.
I never had such a stable htpc as with this installation. My TV card is a DD CineS2 and I am lucky that the driver is already included in the Ubuntu 18.04.releases. Cheers
