Advice on system requirements

Added by Alan Darbin almost 7 years ago

Hi Everyone

Sorry if this is a stupid question or the answer is somewhere and I am just missing it but i can't see how to workout the requirements for a TVHE server i am planning.

My understanding is that with freeview all channels on the same mux can technically be recorded simultaneously so in principle i could record every channel with 8 tuners in reality looking at the channels on there the most I could imagine wanting a recording of would be 50 with a third being HD, this wouldn't be constant but there are a lot of tv shows and movies that come on quite regularly that aren't worth by the DVD's (Pie in the sky, old black and white movies etc) but would be nice to have on the media server for those rainy days where trash tv is at its peak.

So the question I can't find the answer to is how much processing power, Ram and disk space / throughput would be needed for each channel or ultimately is that just too much and if so what would be the maximum I could record.

Thanks in advance for any advice given

Alan

CPU ... any with will allow to run Linux, except if you need transcoding.
Ram 256mb is minimum on modern x86 linux distro 2+Gb will be good.
Storage ... whatever you collect.
