Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue
Added by Ron Von about 7 years ago
I think I pretty much got it all done, but I just can't get video to play. I am suspicious I need to build a stream profile, or tweak an existing one? Anyone know? Or, perhaps I should ask if anyone have a working integration with HDHomeRun Extend - Canadian version.
My mapped services look good, and I get green SNR & SS when trying to play video, but it just doesn't work, using the built in "watch tv" app.
Thoughts?
...and thanks in advance.

So it seems all looks well, but TVheadend thinks the client hung up. I'm guessing the client is indeed hanging up because it don't reconize the stream format. I this sort of log, regardless of media player used, and regardless of OS (windows, or *nix) used.

Hi again,
Would anyone be able to suggest what my issue might be? The log info above repeats continously when I have pressed the play button, say on VLC player for example. Is there some kind of other debug I could do and upload here that would better help you folks help me?
Thanks again.
RE: Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue - Added by Ron Von about 7 years ago
I noticed when trying to play a video stream I see lots of "transport errors" and "continuity errors" on the status page. I am researching that now, but if someone knows the "ah ha" answer to this issue using HDHomeRun I would much appreciate if you can respond.
I have no reason to suspect HDHomeRun is the issue, and here is why:
HDHomeRun streaming to VLC Player = works perfectly fine.
HDHomeRun - intgrated with Plex Media Server (which took like 5 minutes to get working) = works perfectly fine.
Edit, and its not server load. :-)

Well I am still trying to get this to work, but no joy. I'm about ready to give up. For reasons not relateed to this I tried another media streaming server system know as Emby. After booting it up, I added and had live tv streaming, in just 2 minutes, with my HDHomeRun Extend (Canadian version).
Is it possible there is a bug or something that causes TVHeadEnd to not like TS streams from HDHomeRun?

Firstly, what version of Tvh are you using?

I think there's a problem with HDHRs that do transcoding - You could try the work around posted here - https://tvheadend.org/boards/4/topics/21697?r=21728#message-21728
RE: Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue - Added by Jerry Fath about 7 years ago
FWIW, I am running Tvheadend 4.2.4-5~g39dac90 on Lubuntu 16.04 using an HDHomeRun Extend. That's a transcoding, two channel, ATSC device. No problems here.
RE: Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue - Added by Ron Von about 7 years ago
Thanks I will look at that and report back. I have transcoding turned off in the HDHomeRun, I tried the transcoding options too but that made no difference.

And you set that up using DVB input or did you use IPTV? I'm reading the other discussion thread and it sounds like those guys were having trouble getting the mux part to pass and show up as a service. I don't have that issue, I got it all done, just get continuity errors. I'm must re-reading the M3U playlist part now to make sure I understand that.

No IPTV involved for my HDHomeRun (US version). Network type is ATSC-T. I'm streaming to Kodi using the PVR add-on, not to the built-in app and I can't test the built-in app at the moment because we have severe weather and my antenna is disconnected. I'll try later today.
RE: Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue - Added by Jerry Fath about 7 years ago
With my HDHomeRun Extend US version, video plays in the built-in app, but I do get a continuous stream of 'Detected framedrop in audio' and occasional (every 10 seconds or so) continuity errors:
2017-11-06 13:18:48.386 TS: ATSC-T Network/695.028MHz/MOVIES!: AC3 @ #100 Continuity counter error (total 6320)

I'll put the IPTV configuration on hold then. Any chance you could post some screen shots of your configuration pages? I'm really suspicious that the streaming side of the configuration is where the bugger is. I keep seeing this over and over in the logs:
2017-11-07 17:41:09.666 webui: Stop streaming /stream/channel/14e04abb1c05687b82f827479cd0d343?ticket=90027BC5830301A9221D2F6CD001D45505680DFD, client hung up
I am using VLC Player. If I wanted to have the media player send the request to TVHeadEnd what would I put in the "open network stream" field? What should my stream profiles look like? Etc, etc.
RE: Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue - Added by Jerry Fath about 7 years ago
I haven't used vlc as a Tvheadend client, but here's a thread:

I did a few blog posts that have screen shots of my configs. Check part 3 on HDHomeRun [[http://jafath.blogspot.com/]]
RE: Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue - Added by Ron Von about 7 years ago
OKay I will try that. In the meantime can you suggest other Lunix Ubuntu players?
Edit- hmmm my screenshots look like yours, and a really nice blog site btw. More and more I am thinking its the streaming part is what's broken.

Thanks.
I use Kodi with the Tvheadend PVR add-on

Sorry Gerry, I can't find a Tvheadend PVR add-on for Kodi. Did lots of searching but no joy. The Kodi wiki pages lead me to think that the add-on is actually installing TVheadend. So do you have Kodi and TVheadend installed on the same machine or does Kodi pull video from TVheadend over the network? I can't install Kodi on the same machine as TVheadend.
Let me ask this question? If I wanted to pull video from TVheadend using some sort of URL what would that look like? And what format would the stream be? Can TVheadend deliver different stream formats simply by specifying a different URL?
But before I even think about that I guess I have to ask this question? Why does the built-in video player also fail in trying to pull video? My HDhomerun firmware is up to date (currently at Version 20170930), and no other streaming/recording server system (Emby and Plex to name two) have an issue with it? From referencing your blog site, it would look like my set up is all completed and correct. I have muxes that scan okay, mapped services/channels with all sort of info that 'compare' to with what you have, and SNR & signal strength are both green. Should the signal indicators be green all the time? My are only green during scanning and then they go 'empty'. When I try to play a stream they go green again, until I press stop on the video client.
I've spent hours reading and trying and to be honest I really have no idea where I should be investing next. Is there a key critical setting that I could have missed? Could it be the Canadian version of HDHomeRun Extend has a slight but critical difference that TVHeadend does not like?
Stumped to say the least. I'll pick at this for a few more hours over the next week or so, but at so point in time soon it will have to be success or I give up and simply use Emby. The reason I am interested in TVHeadEnd so much is its ability to use multiple different signal sources simultaneously.
RE: Trying to get HDHomeRun working - streams profile issue - Added by Jerry Fath about 7 years ago
What OS are is your Kodi machine running? In Debian/Ubuntu you actually have to apt install the Tvheadend PVR add-on. In Android, the add-on is pre-installed, available under my-addons. I have Kodi installed on several machines around my network, but not on the same machine as Tvheadend.
Are you saying if you go to the Electronic Program Guide tab and click on the little 'tv' icon on the left of one of your channels, the video does not play? Do you see errors in the Tvheadend log pane at the bottom of the window (open by clicking the two little up arrows)?
Pulling video from Tvheadend with a URL would require setting up Tvheadend as a Sat->IPTV server I think. I've not done that, so you're beyond my knowledge there.

Correct. The little built in TV viewer in the EPG page does not work. When I select one of my channels and click the play button I get "Loading" and after say 5 to 10 seconds I get "An unknown error occured".

Using HDHomerun Connect device. Everything runs super good. Gave up launching stream on browser, as there can be a lot of settings set wrong (wrong format, port, browser settings). Playing it on OpenElec via Kodi. using TVheadend plugin.

This is with an HDHomeRun Extend US version which is set to mobile transcode profile, so the video comes in as h.264.
It looks like Tvheadend is tuning a reasonable frequency for your channel 39, but then doesn't get the data stream expected. Which pre-defined muxes did you choose when setting up your network? Can you set your Extend for mobile transcode profile just to see if it makes a difference?

I tried creating my own muxs and using the predefined ones. Both scan up successfully. I also tried changing the HDHomeRun transcoding profile to the various profiles and rescanned the muxs each and every time. Every time the log shows "mpegts", and every time I use the built in "Watch TV" viewer I get the same result "Unknown error occurred", and I often see this in the logs:

I give up on TVHeadend (for now). This reminds me of trying to add a new device (say modem) into an old Windows operating system like 3.11 or NT and having to scour usenet groups trying to find the answer. There had got to be a bug in the TVHeadend code that somehow I am triggering. I got HDHomeRun working on Emby media server in 2 minutes so I'm good to go. If someone has a "ah haaa" moment feel free to post and I will check in from time to time.
Thanks for all your help everyone, especially you Jerry, you really tried. Hope to chat with you again someday. Maybe when/if I try some sort of SAT>IP system if I can find one for Canada.

The only time I've seen "Invalid start code" is from corruption usually due to an encrypted steam.
Could you provide a mux (or a stream) sample?
For a mux go to the muxes tab, copy a play link and do something like.
wget -O tvh.ts http://ip:port/play/stream/765324yuig6879gytyuf76d56
Do that for about 30 seconds and attach it to a new issue on here (link to this thread).
