2 x TBS6981 tuners sharing same IRQ - can't tune as a result

Added by Chris Beasley over 7 years ago

Hi

Got everything installed on my Dell R310 in the rack but trying to scan using the cards fails and won't do anything. Checking lspci -vv kicks out that both cards are on the same IRQ and not the newer PCI-MSI-edge way of doing interrupts. I understand that there might be an issue with TBS cards and IRQ and they need to be forced to move to the new edge interrupt... Has anyone got two of these cards and suffered this issue?

I've posted on the main TBS forums, but I'm not holding out much hope.

Thanks,

CHris

@Chris Chris Chris

You not enable "adapter #1" and "adapter #3" ,but want to show in tvh streams.

From pic tvh tuners settings.JPG you show not 'Enabled' tunner 3, Enabled 1 and tunner 3 and will show all four tunners in tvh streams.

Anyway, I've attached some pictures of the tuners now. AS before Tuners #0 and #2 are working fine and can stream the channels, but tuners #1 and 3 are missing from within TVH.

With os and driver you use.
Github tbs media_build is loading too slow and need tvh service restart
will not explain what happens wit two octo cards ;)

I personal use Ubuntu 14.04LTS with kernel 3.x and driver from tbs page

The adapters are showing as disabled, as I did disable them but there is no LNB settings in those adapters meaning that it won't actually do anything if they are enabled... And when I do, TVH thinks they exist so tries to use them but can't do anything so the stream fails.

@Saen

OS is Ubuntu 16 server and the driver is the crazy_cat version from his build script. TBS drivers from TBS page have not worked for me at all, the crazy drivers are the only ones so far that have worked.

The tuners are still not showing even after multiple resets, and as before are showing in dmesg | grep frontend etc.

I've had a response to my SAT>IP query which is likely to lead to me getting a quad DVB-S2 setup to replace these two cards.

Drivers from page work with kernel 2.xx - 3.xx aka Ubuntu 14.04 Server LTS is the choice with them.
The one from media_build destroy support for any other brand tuners.

That's ok, I've only got TBS tuners for the moment... they will be gone within a month I reckon!

So this is very strange. Have spent the few days configuring the clients to understand if they fit my overall objectives, and they work fine. I figured I'd try and play with the server to see if I could get the tuners working while I wait to get the money together for the Sat>IP tuners; just uninstalled the current drivers, rebuilt using the official TBS and for whatever reason all four are showing... Did absolutely nothing different to previous goes but this time it worked... Only difference is a new kernel version, 81 vs 34... I'm still going to move to Sat>IP as I don't trust the TBS cards and also for other reasons... but its just weird!

TBS drivers do not support DKMS,
which means, when kernel update happens... need to be started from beginning.
As you did. ;)

more interestingly, had to rebuild from scratch again, but this time following exactly the same guides and using the same kernel as before, all four tuners are picked up but again refuse to work! It's becoming mildly amusing rather than annoying now!

I might just 'share' the tvcards using minisatip to a tvh frontend so that when I go an external satip unit I dont have to worry about anything!

This may be a silly question, but is there enough power and have you spoken to TBS?

RE: 2 x TBS6981 tuners sharing same IRQ - can't tune as a result - Added by Chris Beasley over 7 years ago

Power is fine as the cards are in the same machine (Dell R310 with xeon 2.9GHz CPU, 12GB Ram etc.) as they have always been and ran fine in Windows for years, TBS haven't responded to my forum posts or support requests so I've kinda given up! I'm not moving full time to this setup yet as I've still got some work on the clients to do to make it all friendly for the family, but sometime next month they will be ready... Ideally I should be able to move to an external Sat>IP unit within a month but I've now got to the point where this is quite fun to see if I can make it work and then break it!

I've basically proved that the concept of TVH will work for me with Kodi as the front end and TVHclient on my android devices which was the purpose of a lot of these posts at the end of the day, I just didn't think I would need to replace the tv cards so soon!

Well, I've had cards randomly stop working due to a failing power supply after many years. I've had exactly two TBS products, one I purchased and another was a replacement.

The original TBS USB QBox S2 I purchased kept getting extremely hot and the IR kept causing tvheadend to stall when polling, TBS replaced this with a 5922 after sending the Qbox to Bulgaria. It came with a faulty power supply that kept sending interference/noise/something down my phone line causing the VDSL to drop out. Openreach were just as baffled as to why the connection kept failing, even after they'd fixed a fault on the line. I only found the problem out after connecting the TBS via USB to a net-top & the Ethernet went completely dead. Credit to TBS they replaced it [PSU] without fuss, they apparently knew of the issue.. just forgot to inform people..

The drivers leave a lot to be desired! They're not fully open source (some are). Thankfully this has improved a lot recently. The hardware is fine but the building of the drivers is a bit of a pain in the backside.

And, for the reasons above I more than likely won't buy another TBS product (unless it has OSS drivers), not that the products are bad, it's just due to my experience of them. I was more annoyed with the fact that I felt like I was testing a prototype rather than a retail one & I'm not against testing things.

Mark Hunting Clarkstone
USB tuners and internal one are very different
PCI-E port support up to 75 Watts of power on port
+ TBS card have floppy power connector

I'm aware, I have a few non-TBS PCIE cards, these are the cards I'm talking about when the PSU failed. I got these after the issues with the TBS tuner(s). PSU replaced, running fine since.
