TVH ocassionally gets confused for no apparent reason

Added by Pila RPi about 8 years ago

TVH as backend at RPi3 is used with 2 DVB-T sticks for viewing and recording SD TV. HTS Tvheadend 4.0.9 ~ LibreELEC Tvh-addon v7.0.101.

All is peerfect for weeks at the time. Than for no apparant reason, TVH starts acting up, refuses to switch tuners, refuses to tune. After I restart RPi and to not touch anything else, all is perfect again!?!

In most situations, problem gets noticed when one mux is being recorderd and we try to switch to another mux. Second tuners seems not to exist. Most recent issue was: it was recording, but the stream was 0 bytes! And we could not get to another tuner.

I have switched multiple tuners around, I do not see them related to the problem. The antenna signal is decent and fairly constant.

TVH can work for a weeks and then fail. Recently it failed after only 2 days, but this is rare. Normaly a problemm presents after a week or two of perfect operation. Everything is on UPS on my end.

I have two TVH logs describing these two situations.

And I repeat: works perfectly for weks; in each case: RPi reboot alone makes things perfect again! In each case when we noticed this situation, one mux was recording and we wanted to switch to anotehr mux. I tested 3 different makes and 5 different tuners with no improvement.

I've had the same issue with my RPi 3, but it usually acted up within 2-4 days. I only used 1 tuner, a KWorld USB Stick.
I last played with it a few months back using a 4.1.x build. I was interested in that build for the OTA EPG on US-ATSC. I usually first noticed the problem because the EPG was not updating.

I saw this post going through the forums hoping for an update, but it is not clear this has been addressed. Its not clear to me that this is a RPi specific issue.

What you're describing sounds similar to what experienced on the Pi 2. When I used my Pi with Tvheadend the rtl stick would randomly die for no reason, and just like yours resulted in "poll timeout" (poll timeout basically means Tvheadend waited as long as it could for data from the tuner but received nothing).

I stopped using Tvheadend on the Pi a while ago but now use it with rtl_sdr & still experience the same problem after a few days. I'm not sure if it's a power or driver issue, or the stick just does not like being used on the Pi.

When the stick(s) fail check dmesg for any errors or strange messages (device dis/reconnects etc).

You could also try setting the power save mode for the tuner(s) & see if that helps (note that the Silicon Lab tuners can get a bit cranky when waking up from power save & will just send garbage).

As I said I no longer use Tvheadend on the Pi but do use it on a regular system and both the rtl & silabs sticks work fine (minus the cranky wake up issue).

Few days ago i did set Power Save for both tuners, and I also did set Stream -> stream profiles -> estart on Error to On and Continue On Access Error to Off. Now it is wait and hope.

I measured my tuners, they draw 170 mAh maximum each, so I do not see that as a problem. RPi has only 2 tuners and USB remote sensor to serve. Its power is well over 4,8v measured on an USB output at any time.
