Correct hardware for Unicable/SCR Tvheadend server?

Added by Jacky Lang about 8 years ago

Hi there, new member here!

I have been using a Tvheadend a while now to manage my cable TV, but recently we decided to switch our ISP service provider and while we were at it we also switched to satellite tv.
However, one of our initial problems was that our cable canals are not big enough for more than one coax cable. After doing some research I decided to attempt to build a unicable/scr setup.
Right now I have an amd barebone PC build that is going to be a linux server (for game servers, dev projects and tvheadend). I have additional devices for NAS and openelec based kodi frontends), a 4 channel unicable lnb and a really good coax cable.
What I still need is/are a S2 TV tuner card(s) that support unicable and a CI module and some information on how to properly configure it.

My current idee is to either get a Cine S2 from DD (heard good things about it) and combine it with a pci ci module or to get myself a DD OctopusCI S2 Pro (duo sat tuner with integrated ci slot and unicable support) and hope that it works with Tvheadend.
However, there are also a few other things troubling me. I read in a few posts that I might have to patch my kernel to support unicable (dd website claims that their card is compatible with all newer linux distros without any patching whatsoever) or use a modified Tvheadend version.

First step would probably be be to get a (hopefully) supported pci card and some basic information so that I can start trying around and report back. I would really like to go with the OctopusCI S2 Pro, would be great if someone can make an educated guess on wether or not this is a good idea.

EDIT: I live in Austria/Europe (ASTRA) and need the CI module for an ORF/HD AUSTRIA card like this: https://www.hdaustria.at/witbb/images/hardware_module/orf_hdaustria_cam.jpg

PS: And any recommendations for my linux server's distro? I think I will go with ubuntu (cause I am familiar with it) but as far as I have heard Debian/CentOS might be better suited. Any recommendations?

PPS: sorry if I posted this in the wrong subforum. :D
