Need some help/guidance with my setup

Added by iwannaknow iwannaknow over 8 years ago

Hello all,

I'm trying to get live TV/pvr working on my HTPC. I'm running libre elec and was following this guide:

http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=270385

I don't think step 3 applies to me since I'm using something completely different.

I'm an xfinity subcriber and my service came with their digital starter package. Can I plug my tv tuner directly into the wall and get their channels? They provided me with this small STB that's meant to unscramble their signal (i believe). I just don't think my tuner picks up anything.. Maybe I'm not using the correct item in the drop down, I selected ATSC, but not sure which pre-defined mux to use.

I bought an OTA antenna, but it only picked up a few channels, and not the ones I was looking for (FOX HD, ABC HD)... How can I use the service that i'm essentially paying for to get channels through my outlet?

Thanks!

No, if you're a cable subscriber, you need a tuner for your computer that accepts a CableCARD. Tvheadend doesn't really support CableCARDs, but there are workarounds. I am successfully using 3 SiluconDust HDHomerun Prime receivers (each supports 3 tuners, so I can receive and/or record 9 simultaneous streams/channels).

However, it is a little bit of work to get it going properly. MythTV offers better support for CableCARD tuners; but it can work with Tvheadend.

In short, though, No you cannot just plug in your cable feed. (Especially with Comcast, who encrypt everything and mark more channels than necessary as Copy-Once, meaning your only way of watching those channels is with Windows Media Center.)

I am using Verizon Fios and they really don't flag anything but HBO. I can't for the life of me get this working with my hdhomerun. Most instructions I have found are incomplete or outdated. Is there any possible way you can explain how you set this up. A setup for dummies if possible. I think current hrhomerun setup tutorial would do the internet and potential TvHeadend users a great service...

Give me a little time to put something together. The reason being: Tvheadend doesn't really support the Prime. You have to resort to workarounds because the HDHomeRun support in Tvheadend only supports DVB or ATSC networks, and CableCARD networks are neither DVB- nor ATSC-based.

(I'm hoping to change Tvheadend's HDHomeRun support to include CableCARD support, but it's a pet project that I'm working on in my spare time.)
