Rotor GUI clarifications suggestions

Added by P B over 8 years ago

Hi,

First off, thanks for providing such a great piece of software. As a recent mythtv refugee, it's really a breath of fresh air!

However, I do have a couple of questions related to rotor setup, where I think things could be clarified better in the GUI.

In 'TV adapters - USALS', you can pick a satellite longitude, which is fine.

However in 'network', you can also define 'orbital position'. Which of the two takes precedence, since I want to tweak the longitude a bit to get better reception? Or, if the 'orbital position' is purely informative, it might make sense to rename this to 'satellite name' or something like that, to break the association with rotor positioning.

Also, for a 'GOTOX rotor', you can set 'gotox position'. It's not really clear to me whether this is 'command 6E - Goto x.x - drive motor to angular position', or 'command 6b - goto nn - drive motor to satellite position xx'. It might be better to reword this option to either 'Stored satellite position (1,2,...)' or 'Motor angular position (degrees)'.

Finally, for the 'GOTOX rotor', there's another parameter you can fill in, namely 'satellite longitude'. If you fill in both the 'GOTOX Position' and 'Satellite longitude', which one takes precedence? Wouldn't it make more sense to remove 'Satellite longitude' from the 'GOTOX Rotor' settings page?

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm new to Tvh, VDR still installed, but now I thought it is time to give Tvh a try. I was amazed how mature the 4.1 unstable version became! Perhaps it is time to switch? Time will tell.

Anyway, I have a motorized dish that worked really nice with USALS on VDR. I understand Tvh also supports USALS, but I'm a little bit confused now, I though nemal nemal B or someone else might able to help me.

1) How do I configure USALS properly? The OP questions are interesting for me as well, somewhat confusing.
Does it work like simply adding the Longitude and Latitude coordinates as with any other STB (or VDR too)?

2) What happens with EPG scan? Take the following scenario: my dish is pointed to S0,8W, but I have configured S16E too. When Tvh is idle, it will periodically grab EPG, correct? Will it move automatically to from S0,8W to S16E to grab EPG, or the EPG for channels on different position will be grabbed only if I tune a channel on that satellite? It is very important, as VDR (without the patch) would move the dish back&forth constantly when EPG update is triggered, and this is something I definitely want to avoid.

Thanks!

Hi,

You do indeed need to input your own coordinates, as well as the positions of the satellites.

As for EPG, it will move the dish, but only when it's grabbing EPG, which I've set up to happen twice a day.

Thanks, I will try and see how it works. I don't have visual on the dish, so I can't check if it is actually moving or not.

Now I'm beginning to understand how Tvh handles EPG. I have the default OTA EPG enabled with the default Cron settings.
So Tvh will not move back and forth the dish, but it works like this: dish pointed at 0.8W. EPG update is triggered, it updates 0.8W, then moves the dish to the next configured satellite, let's say 16E, grabs the EPG there, and moves to the next, and so on.
When finished, it stays at the last satellite or moves back to the initial position?
Is it possible to define the order of satellites?

The rotor stays in the last position, as far as I can see. I don't think it's possible to change the order.
