How to downgrade?

I'm currently running version 4.0.8~jessie, and getting tired of the frequent crashes [usually while recording]. I never had this sort of instability on 3.4. Is there a more stable version I can go back to? Will I have to compile it myself to do this?

Answering my own question.

Building from source is simple, and my build of 4.08 is [so far] a lot more stable than the one I installed with apt-get.
