3.4.27 -> 4.x upgrade path

Hi all,
Apologies if this is in a Wiki page or FAQ somewhere, but I'm looking for some guidance on upgrading my trusty 3.4.27 install to something in the 4.x branch. (a certain bug is preventing me getting a certain channel, and this is fixed in 4.x). I'm on Ubuntu 12.04.

Is it a case of fresh install and reconfigure? Or is there anything to be salvaged from my existing config?

Make a backup and test is all I can suggest, if that fails wipe your config.
