Virgin UK cable network muxes missing

Added by John Mason about 9 years ago

Hi
I have a USB astrometa dvbc/t2/t stick that works fine on my windows PC
I have now setup a Linux based openelec kodi htpc on this x86 computer.
Tvheadend recognises the stick but when I go to setup the mixes/network..all the European countries cable networks are listed but not UK?..why is this so?
Thanks

It's because not many people use/have access to the network to be able to generate a list and I don't think many of the services are FTA anyway.
Plus its illegal to connect to their network using unauthorised equipment.

You really only need to know one mux for Tvheadend to find the rest if they broadcast a NIT (They did the last time I had cable but that was many moons ago & it was only visible in the engineer menu of an old box (pre-tivo) ).

Thanks Mark
So is it illegal in those other countries listed to connect with illegal equipment?
I only want FTA to view on a media centre in another room..was just curious and def. do not want to break the law
Also the astrometa dvbc tuner is recognised but failing the scan when I do try a known cable freq.
Has anyone got this dongle to work in TVH on cable?

I can't answer that fully as some providers don't mind as long as they know you're doing so, However VM do not as it says in their T&Cs.

But I myself have connected unauthorised equipment in the past (when it was all analogue & scrambled) & had no complaints as long as what you're using doesn't send too much noise back down the cable you should be fine.

I doubt any of the services are FTA, I suppose you could take your card out & see which ones still work, does VM even use cards anymore? :p.

I can't even get mine to tune to DVB-T2 (Mine is the revision 1 Astrometa Stick though).

I remember using an analogue tuner on the cable network years ago (when it was possible to use software to descramble the video!) at 3am and found a poorly hidden channel that was basically a desktop screen used for monitoring the network for the area, whoever was using this machine was looking at porn.

I can't for the life of me think of why anyone would do this on a machine that has its screen broadcast across the network!

It wasn't even good porn..

I can say that most providers across Europe do not require there own equipment to work and you can buy TV's with the DVB-C connection to connect the cable directly so they do not require a special box to work but Virgin Media have it in there T&C's that you can not plug anything other than there box in. while it's not illegal it's in breach of there terms and conditions and if they detect you using something that is not authorised they will disconnect all your services.

When it comes to what is available FTA over this network you will find that the list of channels is less than what is offered on freeview or freesat infact you only get 5-10 channels the last time I saw.

Your better off connecting to the freeview DVB-T or freesat DVB-S for the free channels instead and avoid the Cable service in the UK.
