no channels found on one computer, but plugging in the same device into another computer, channels are found

I have tvheadend working fine on my laptop, but I want it to run on my desktop. The same setup on my laptop works and produces channels, but on the desktop it does not. The build configuration appears to be similar except for the desktop has avahi support and the laptop does not. Other than that, they should be identical.
Are there any other dependencies that would cause the channels not to appear? All I see on the desktop is scan no data or something to that effect.
