Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner

Added by Stephen Neal about 10 years ago

Hi all

This looks like it could be very good value if Open Source drivers appear for it : http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-one/accessories/digital-tv-tuner#fbid=1ui_UaaGUzy GBP£25/EUR€30 for a DVB-T/T2/C USB tuner for use with the Microsoft Xbox One (but like the Sony Play TV presumably usable on any PC platform if Linux drivers appear)

Does anyone know if this tuner has been made to work on Linux?

Looks like it's for sale for £9.99 in the UK at the moment. A bargain for DVB-T2/C if it does work.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by roswell grey about 8 years ago

I tried one a couple of weeks ago (was tempted by a £20 price-tag at the time)
On stock Debian 8 and the latest Raspbian Jessie, it was not recognised.
I cannot remember with 100% certainty if I tried it on Debian backports Kernel 4.7.0, however I think I did, and believe it was still not recognised.

Didn't fancy hacking round the kernel modules, so gave up on it :(
Shame - would have been a bargin indeed ...

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Anthony Thomas about 8 years ago

I bought one anyway to have a play with, though I probably don't have the time at the moment to hack about with different kernel modules.

I guess it's been on the market for long enough that if it's not supported by now it probably won't be, but I live in hope!

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Gábor Gajdos almost 8 years ago

I tried to get it work on raspbian jessie
running kernel compiled from the raspberry's GitHub rpi-4.8.y branch.

Here is what I can see in the dmesg:

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by James Gould almost 8 years ago

Would be great to get this working ordered one today for £7.95 new from eBay

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Fabian Feary almost 8 years ago

Also got one of these knocking around. Has anybody made progress on DVB-T support?

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Dan Hans over 7 years ago

Ive just picked two of these up very very cheap as I use DVB-C/oscam here so not bothered about DVB-T/T2.

They are 7.40 on Amazon UK at the moment. These would be great to get working fully as I the RTL/Panasonic based cheap tuners from the internet never seemed to work very well.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Josu Lazkano over 7 years ago

Do you check the linuxtv wiki? There will be some information.

If there is no info it will be a good start to add all info as you can in the wiki.

Regards.

@ Josu Lazkano

No mention of it on there as yet.

Thanks

It would be awesome if someone develops a driver for linux.
As you say they are unbelievably cheap on eBay.
Quad tuner for <£40! Nice.

I checked, and in the current folder (~/media_build/linux) as well as the media_tree folder these files exist at the specified paths. I have kernel headers installed and I'm running 4.8.0-54-generic on Ubuntu 16.04.2 (amd64).

dpkg --get-selections | grep 4.8.0-54
linux-headers-4.8.0-54 install
linux-headers-4.8.0-54-generic install
linux-image-4.8.0-54-generic install
linux-image-extra-4.8.0-54-generic install

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I tried it on a Raspberry Pi as well, same result unfortunately. This is a clean install and I've installed a more recent kernel, hoping this would automagically enable support for this tuner (which it didn't). Even on the older kernel I got the same message when compiling so I doubt it's actually related.

Someone (walterav) on the ubuntuforums has sent me a tar file with all the patches applied that were needed. The tar can be downloaded here: https://readycloud.netgear.com/client/dllink.html#t=03rheztpfx5/media_build.tar but the link will expire on the 31st of October 2017. Note that it has only been tested on the 4.10-x kernel (I used 16.04 with HWE kernel). I'm working on a script/smaller archive to apply to the git repo. This script would also verify the kernel version etc.

Edit: you will have to edit the version file in the v4l folder to match the kernel you're compiling for!

walterav from ubuntuforums wrote:

this tuner should popup in tvheadend and work just out of the box, hotswap/unplug will crash the driver and multiple usb xbox tuners will not work since only the latest in numbering is usable by tvheadend. If you have 3 usb xbox tuners active and scan/mux on the last tuner it will end up with three times as much services as on a single tuner, like its leaking scan results from each other adapter into the last adapter

Thanks for that file.

I have built and updated the kernel of my Rasperry Pi 3 to 4.10.17-v7+. Unfortunately it's not working:

Installing kernel modules under /lib/modules/4.10.0-21-generic/kernel/drivers/media/:
/sbin/depmod -a 4.10.0-21-generic
depmod: ERROR: could not open directory /lib/modules/4.10.0-21-generic: No such file or directory
depmod: FATAL: could not search modules: No such file or directory
Makefile.media:1659: recipe for target 'media-install' failed

There is no 4.10.0-21 in /lib/modules

ls /lib/modules
4.10.17-v7+ 4.4.50+ 4.4.50-v7+

Is my kernel to new?

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Felix Mann over 7 years ago

I'm currently not at home, but there is a file called .version in the media_build folder (or one of its subfolders) that contains the kernel version that the modules compile against. You should update it with the version of the kernel on your Pi. But because the contents of the archive were built on x86 I'm not sure whether this will work for you. Please report back if changing the kernel version fixed the build for you. I originally intended to use this on a Pi 2 but gave up and moved to a NUC instead (I have dual tuner anyway).

Regards,

Felix

EDIT: the file to edit is: ./v4l/.version

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Alexander E over 7 years ago

After changing the version the build worked without any errors. Sadly Tvheadend still doesn't find the tuner. Probably because this is the x86 version as you said. Anyway thanks for your help.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Anthony Thomas over 7 years ago

Is it present in /dev/dvb ?
Any dmesg errors or obvious pointers? Firmware required?
Also, how long did it take to compile on the Raspberry Pi? Which model are you using?
Ideally I want to try it on a Raspberry Pi but might use an old Atom/Ion system I have going spare.

Also, how long did it take to compile on the Raspberry Pi? Which model are you using?

It just took a few minutes. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 (Model B?).

Ideally I want to try it on a Raspberry Pi but might use an old Atom/Ion system I have going spare.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Anthony Thomas over 7 years ago

Currently building on my atom/ion system....slowly.

In case I'm doing it wrong, is it just a case of extracting the media_build.tar, editing .version to my kernel version, make, sudo make install?

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Anthony Thomas over 7 years ago

I can confirm this is working!

System:
Asus EB1501
Intel Atom 330
2GB RAM
Ubuntu 17.04
Linux ION 4.10.0-24-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 14 08:14:34 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Not sure if required but I put the MN88472 firmware in /lib/firmware
http://palosaari.fi/linux/v4l-dvb/firmware/MN88472/02/latest/

Running minisatip to act as a satip server - feeding to TVH on another system. It presents DVB-C and DVB-T.

DVB-C is working well so far for me. Time to buy some more adapters.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Alexander E over 7 years ago

Nice to hear that it's working for you on x86. So I have to find a way to build the media_build for arm. The MN88472 firmware didn't change anything.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Mark Clarkstone over 7 years ago

Just to say, I've spoken to crope/Antti Palosaari [the dev who wrote the Panasonic MN88472/3 driver on Linux for the Astrometa devices].

07:05:28 - crope: it basically needs TDA18250B tuner driver
07:05:45 - crope: usb-bridge and demod driver already exists
08:02:33 - crope: yeah, could be written "pretty" easily just taking usb sniffs. but it is still workload of week or two

I think he needs an xbox one to do any of that though, if anyone wants to help, contact him on freenode [He's in #linuxtv].

Anthony Thomas wrote:

From what I was told the driver is buggy and will not work with multiple adapters of the same type (yet). Purchasing multiple adapters will probably result in only one of them working.

walterav from ubuntuforums wrote:

this tuner should popup in tvheadend and work just out of the box, hotswap/unplug will crash the driver and multiple usb xbox tuners will not work since only the latest in numbering is usable by tvheadend. If you have 3 usb xbox tuners active and scan/mux on the last tuner it will end up with three times as much services as on a single tuner, like its leaking scan results from each other adapter into the last adapter

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Anthony Thomas over 7 years ago

Thanks for the info.

I've already ordered them, very cheap (~£6 each) so I'll check once they arrive.

I'm not using them directly with tvheadend so maybe it won't be an issue for me. I'm basically creating a satip server using minisatip, it'll just present (eventually) 4 DVB-C tuners to TVH on a separate system. Much like the 4 tuner DVB-S2 satip servers do. Time will tell, I'll feedback once I know.

RE: Xbox One DVB-T/T2/C tuner - Added by Anthony Thomas over 7 years ago

Just a little update after 2 days of use.

Still going strong and very happy.

Seeing some occasional pixelation, but only on encrypted channels, so I think that's an oscam/ecm issue rather than tuner/driver/setup.

Will report back once my extra tuners arrive.
