SOLVED: Please help me understand tuner priority value and how to tell which tuner is used

Added by K Shea about 10 years ago

If someone wanted to add a second DVB-S2 tuner card to a backend system, and make sure that tuner was the preferred one for the channels it is capable of receiving, how would that be accomplished? In newer versions of TVHeadEnd, under the TV Adapters tab, in the Advanced Settings there is a Priority field. The help for that page says:

Priority
The tuner priority value (higher value = higher priority to use this tuner).

So from that I would infer that a tuner with priority 1 would be preferred over a tuner with priority 0, correct? I ask because in searching for information on this I've seen a few posts that suggest that a LOWER value takes priority, and I'm not certain if they are implying that the help text is in error, or they are referring to something else entirely. So, is it correct to say that a tuner with priority "1" would be preferred over a tuner with priority 0, and that a tuner with priority "2" would be preferred over either "0" or "1"? I know that seems obvious from the help texts, but I just want to make certain the help text is correct! And is there anything else I need to know about setting tuner priorities?

Also, is there any way to tell what tuner is being used during the time a recording is in progress? Perhaps it is supposed to but no matter which tuner is actually in use, it always seems to be reported as #0 on both the Status page and in the log. If I start two recordings on two different tuners, both tuners will be referred to as "TurboSight TBS 6991SE DVBS/S2 frontend : DVB-S #0". I suspect that the "#0" refers to the card number rather than the tuner/adapter number, but when the card has multiple tuners I don't see any way to identify which is being used. If it were possible to add a field on the status page that shows the tuner in use, it would be a big help. Maybe instead of just using "#0", it could show something like "#0:0" for the first card and first tuner on that card, "#0:1" for the first card, second tuner, "#1:1" for the second card, second tuner, etc. (assuming that counts start at 0).

In older versions it was lower = higher priority but in newer ones it is as you say.

Rename the tuner in Tvheadend, if running git with the adapter tree select the tuner you want to rename and enter the new name in the Name field hit save and you're done.

Thank you!!! Renaming the tuner works perfectly. Such a simple solution and yet it simply did not occur to me!
