HLS Transcoding

It seems ffmpeg supports transcoding to a HLS stream. As such is it as easy as it sounds to use the current transcoiding stuff and just add a new container HLS alongside MKV and TS?

If so does anyone have any pointers on how to do that? I'm a Java programmer so pointers still scare me. If anyone can give me some ideas I might be able to put it in.
