August DVB-T210

Added by derp derp over 10 years ago

Hi. Was wondering if this was compatible with tvheadend as there's not much information from users about this device. Does anyone have one? Is it working well with DVB-T2 channels and HD channels?

please let me know! thanks!

Thanks for the hint, but unfortunately this seems to make no difference.

This is with dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw from openelec. I tried the other suggested firmwares, but it doesn't work at all. I also have all usb3 ports, but don't have any bios toggle to set usb2 mode. Any idea what can I try or what to look for to solve this?

I also see these checksum errors sometimes, usually when I haven't used the tuner for a while. The older 4.0.4 firmware is the worst for this, version 4.0.11 does it but not as much and eventually clears up after a few tunes, 4.0.19 doesn't work at all, I receive nothing from the tuner with this firmware.

Like Adam (above) I've been happily running this stick 24/7 on RPi2 for months with fw Ver4.0.4, but also tried 4.0.19 and it works. This is all with OpenELEC and OSMC which is now using Jessie and kernel 4.x. Sounds like this has got to be something to do with the USB interface.

BTW, as I understand it, the August T210 is equivalent to Geniatech T220, not T230.

Yes you're right, my above comments are for the August T210 v2 (a rebranded Mygica T230) which uses the Si26** chipset not the Sony CXD2820R like the original August T210.

Damn companies using similar names for two different devices, bah!

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Carles Pagès almost 9 years ago

Mine is also a T210v2. I tested with all firmware versions (04, 11 and 19) and .19 is still the most functional. Testing further I saw that it fails even if I don't leave it idle for a while, but change channels several times. No wonder that module option is not solving anything. Here's the log in case someone can have a look: http://pastebin.ca/3289427
I even tried connecting through a usb hub, but doesn't make a difference.

From your log this is exactly what happens with mine running any of the firmware available online, I'm using 4.0.11 as it's the most stable for me so far.

On 4.0.11 it tunes almost instantly but suffers with those checksum errors at the start, stopping and restarting (the stream) usually fixes it. When using 4.0.19 Tvheadend gives up trying to receive anything from the tuner but it does work on occasion if I use something like VLC to constantly request a service but it takes forever and usually times out.

Has anyone managed to get an August T210 v2 / Mygia/Geniatech T230 to work correctly with TV Headend and DVB-C?

When we try tuning we get :

2016-01-24 21:09:22.000 mpegts: 370MHz in BBB - tuning on Silicon Labs Si2168 : DVB-C #0
2016-01-24 21:09:22.000 linuxdvb: Silicon Labs Si2168 : DVB-C #0 - failed to tune [e=Invalid argument]

This is even with no settings in the mux configured to AUTO? The stick works OK with w_scan.

dmesg | grep dvb output here http://pastebin.com/EhSYcRuG
w_scan -f c -c SE output here http://pastebin.com/Zq5Ah2kV

Hi All
Has anybody managed to get the August DVB-210 (V2) working with TV Headend in Ubuntu?
And if so, can you please give me a clue on how you did it, i.e. install the drivers to begin with?

Many Thanks
Swanny :)

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Graham H over 8 years ago

If you have an up-to-date Ubuntu you shouldn't need to worry about drivers, they should all be there. Plug the thing in and have a look at dmesg to see if it's recognised. If you see messages about loading modules then you are good.

For tvheadend, you just need to add the TVH repository according to the instructions at tvheadend.org and apt-get install.

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Paul Grimes over 8 years ago

Thank You very much.
I will take a look and see.
Appreciate the reply
Swanny :)

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Graham H over 8 years ago

Ooops! Just looked on a machine where I've never used that dongle and the firmware files are not there. What you need to do is:

cd /lib/firmware
sudo wget https://github.com/OpenELEC/dvb-firmware/blob/master/firmware/dvb-tuner-si2158-a20-01.fw?raw=true -O dvb-tuner-si2158-a20-01.fw
sudo wget https://github.com/OpenELEC/dvb-firmware/blob/master/firmware/dvb-demod-si2168-02.fw?raw=true -O dvb-demod-si2168-02.fw

Sorry for the confusion.

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Paul Grimes over 8 years ago

Thank You very much for that and for checking for me, also the code.
I will give this a go.

Thanks again :)

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Adam Bowen over 8 years ago

I was just going to suggest that you grabbed the latest firmware from OpenELEC, but the two commands Graham posted will already get those for you.

The reason I was going to suggest updating the firmware to the latest version was that I recently upgraded my RPi2 to Jesse and my tuners stopped tuning. They were detected okay, and dmesg showed the correct firmware being loaded, but they would not tune. I updated both firmwares to the latest version from OpenELEC and I was back in business. For anyone wondering, the working firmware md5sums (for Raspbian jesse at least) are:

8e98d25d6219e235b519a3c47dbfa856 dvb-tuner-si2158-a20-01.fw
b2670d8ae5e3369fc71edbb98cdd8f6e dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw

Paul, once you have downloaded the firmware, and either re-plugged the tuner stick, or just rebooted, if you run the command:

dmesg

you should see something like this in the output:

[ 277.318375] si2168 5-0064: found a 'Silicon Labs Si2168-B40'
[ 277.355261] si2168 5-0064: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw'
[ 278.111956] si2168 5-0064: firmware version: 4.0.11
[ 278.128797] si2157 6-0060: found a 'Silicon Labs Si2148-A20'
[ 278.139812] si2157 6-0060: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-tuner-si2158-a20-01.fw'
[ 279.409725] si2157 6-0060: firmware version: 2.1.9

That will confirm that the firmware has loaded, and you should then be able to use the commands from the dvb-tools package to scan for channels, or just enable it in Tvheadend and see if it works.

If you want to check the card manually, then you can run something like (I'm using the dvbv5 tools here, but there are others such as w_scan which work the same):

dvbv5-scan /usr/share/dvb/dvb-t/uk-WinterHill

The tuning file for winter hill that I'm using is from the dtv-scan-tables package, but Tvheadend will probably have installed a set of these too (usually in /usr/share/tvheadend/data/dvb-scan/dvb-t). Whichever you use, you need to make sure you are using an up-to-date version that includes the DVB-T2 settings for HD channels (DELIVERY_SYSTEM = DVBT2). You can always grab the latest versions from linuxtv.org, but Ubuntu or Tvheadend probably has the newest ones already. Oh, and don't forget to change it to your particular transmitter (Winter Hill is mine).

Good luck!

Adam

Sorry Guys. A bit more help please.
I ran the git clone and it looks like it has done it, but then when I enter ./configure it give me an error?
Any ideas please where to go with this?
I just copied the instructions from

Thanks

Paul

You shouldn't have to compile it. Just add the tvh repository and apt-get install:
https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend/wiki/AptRepository

G

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Paul Grimes over 8 years ago

Thanks Graham
I added deb https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend/wiki/AptRepository then I got this

paul@paul-OptiPlex-GX520:~$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
paul@paul-OptiPlex-GX520:~$ sudo apt-get update
E: Malformed entry 54 in list file /etc/apt/sources.list (Suite)
E: The list of sources could not be read.

So then I followed the link and added
deb https://bintray.com/tvheadend
then I update and again I get this?

paul@paul-OptiPlex-GX520:~$ sudo apt-get update
E: Malformed entry 54 in list file /etc/apt/sources.list (Suite)
E: The list of sources could not be read.

Sorry to be a pain about this

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Paul Grimes over 8 years ago

I then found this
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 379CE192D401AB61
$ sudo apt-add-repository "https://dl.bintray.com/tvheadend/deb COMPONENT"
// COMPONENT is one of the above components
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install tvheadend

I entered sudo apt-add-repository "https://dl.bintray.com/tvheadend/deb stable" but then I get E: Unable to locate package tvheadend

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Graham H over 8 years ago

I just tried it and had 403 errors, indicating an issue with the key file. Then, the instructions at https://bintray.com/tvheadend/ubuntu are different again and they also give me 403s. You'd better search or ask in a different thread as it's not dongle related.

[Edit] The 403s are not a key file issue but apparently because the bintray disk quota has been used up - reported elsewhere.

Note you seem to now have a corrupted /etc/apt/sources.list file so you should remove any lines referring to tvheadend from it. (sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list)

Then your command should look like:

echo "deb https://dl.bintray.com/tvheadend/deb vivid stable" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

or, probably better:
echo "deb https://dl.bintray.com/tvheadend/ubuntu stable main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

depending on which instructions you believe.

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Paul Grimes over 8 years ago

Thanks Graham
very true, I have the dongle working, so I will pop off to find or start another thread.
Thanks for all your help
Paul :)

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by FuN KeY over 8 years ago

Using your instruction I was able to setup the tuner quite easily on ubuntu 16.04 (no recompile, just add the required firmwares).

I just wanted to note that I had some trouble adding DVB-T2 muxes. If I did leave everything on automatic the scanning did fail. I had to help tvheadend by populating details (Bandwidth, delivery system, Constellation, ...). With those details it worked flawlessly

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Ben Rometsch about 8 years ago

Has anyone managed to get the v2 card totally stable in Raspbian/Debian/Ubuntu? I fried my v1 stick (don't ask!) which was rock solid, bought another (got a v2) and have it working, but it appears to die and require a cold reboot on my RPi2.

RE: August DVB-T210 - Added by Graham H about 8 years ago

Works for me under OSMC (Debian) on Pi2. The only problem I have is if I leave it on (tuned) all night in the morning the sound is gone or way out of synch, but I suspect that's Kodi/OSMC, not the stick, as the effect comes and goes with each OSMC upgrade.

You could try different firmware versions - I heard some are better than others. Mine gives the following from dmesg | grep si21:

[ 5.826695] si2168 3-0064: Silicon Labs Si2168 successfully attached
[ 5.840694] si2157 4-0060: Silicon Labs Si2147/2148/2157/2158 successfully attached

OK well I tracked down those versions and interestingly it now all seems much more stable. Have attempted tuning several times over a few hours and nothing has crashed yet. Thanks for the help Graham.
