Hauppauge hvr2250 - HTSP client no input detected

Does anyone have any experience with this card?
I am running Openelec 3.2.4 with XBMC and tvheadend on an AMD E350 Fusion system with the Hauppauge hvr2250 card.
My cable runs from the roof, through the attic, along the front of the house and into my living room and through a cheap signal amplifier with one output to the tv and the other to my home theatre system.
If I watch a channel on the TV then everything is good. Just moved from a Panasonic tv to a no-name brand and just as good on no-name as before.
If I try watching TV through TV headend then some channels won't come in at all (system says TVheadend HTSP client no input detected) and others are sometimes ok and other times break up with signal lost yet are fine on the tv directly.
I just did a little looking on the web interface status section and for a channel that works on the tv and yet won't on the htpc the web interface shows a signal strength of 85% with no bit error rates, SNR of "unknown" and keeps cycling from the state "testing" to "bad" with the popup on XBMC of "TVheadend HTSP client no input detected". Bottom panel shows 19708kb/s for the channel and yet the top panel shows 0kb/s bandwidth - I don't understand that difference.
Any pointers for a guy that would like to consolidate everything onto the one box .... and then be able to use my Raspberry Pi based htpcs in my other rooms, including the bathroom :), to watch tv too by streaming it across my network.
Cheers, Duncan
