Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd

Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

Hi Friends,

I am new to this forum. I have installed TVHeadEnd at my Ubuntu system.

I have a query regarding DVB-S TV Streaming using TVHeadEnd. My query is I want to stream free to air channels that are available in my region. So for that please suggest me what should I go to buy for -

1. Single TV Tuner Card
2. Dual TV Tuner Card
3. Quad TV Tuner Card

There are total 4 Transponder frequencies that I would like to stream from my Ubuntu PC using TVHeadEnd. There are 10 channels in 1 transponder. There are total 40 channels in all transponders.
But I want to stream only 15 channels from all transponders, in the following way -

1. Transponder-1: 4 channels
2. Transponder-2: 2 channels
3. Transponder-3: 4 channels
4. Transponder-4: 5 channels

Please confirm can I do this easily if I go for dual TV Tuner card, Or I need only quad TV Tuner card. Can I stream all these 15 channels from 4 transponders by using single TV Tuner Card in TVHeadEnd?

Please help me and suggest me how many tuners card I purchase.

Thanks & Regards,
ErSehmi

A quad tuner is what you'd need for that. think of it as a tuner for each muxer you want constant access to.

Thanks friend.

It concludes that in TvHeadEnd, For Muxing/Streaming, 1 Transponder Stream, 1 Tuner Card is required. So, if I want to stream minimum 1 channel from each transponder, then also I need quad tuner card.

Please confirm if I understood the scenario.

Once again thanks for your help & quick response!

Hi Friends,

Please help me once again I have selected the TBS 6985 Card. Please suggest me can I use all the 4 tuners simultaneously in TVHeadEnd without any issues like what people said for 6981.

I want to stream the channels from all the 4 transponders.

Please confirm!

Thanks & Regards,
ErSehmi

You understand the scenario correctly there.

I cannot explain the process as I'm using an older custom version until motor support is fixed, but if i under stand correctly you create your transponder list(not sure of the name) list. then under adaptors link all your tuners to this config option and they should all share the same list.

As long as your card is recognised by linux and your system is powerful enough to handle them yes. You can have 100 tuners in your system if you really wanted and they can all be used at the same time as long as the computer can handle it.

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

Thanks Gary for your suggestions!

I have concluded that TBS has one hardware called TBS2990 MOI Streaming Box. And I have checked its hard ware specs it has 1 GHz processor, also it has 2 tuners inbuild, and TBS claims that both of them can work simultaneously.

And as compared to that I have Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz, 4 GB Ram, NVidia 9500 GT with 1 GB dedicated graphics memory with Ubuntu installed on it. And I think if TBS MOI box with 1 GHz processer can handle 2 tuners then I dont think the configuration I have is incapable to handle 4 tuners.

One more that all the channels I want to stream are of SD resolution (720 x 576i).

@Gary - Also please confirm me one more thing. In TVHeadEnd - can I stream more than one transponder stream (mux) with single TV Tuner card. I have doubt on this.

Please suggest am I correct ?

Thanks & Regards,
ErSehmi

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Anonymous almost 11 years ago

If you choose the TBS6985, YES you can stream in theory all those 40 channels from the 4 transponders at the same time, in the real world it will depend on your system and how good your network performs, cpu, graphics card and ram are the least important, more important are disk throughput when recording and network speed.

If you use a single TV tuner, you CANNOT receive more than 1 transponder at the same time.

You need 1 TUNER for every TRANSPONDER you want to watch at the same time.

So 1 TUNER gives you 10 channels simultaneous watching
So 2 TUNERS gives you 20 channels simultaneous watching
So 3 TUNERS gives you 30 channels simultaneous watching
So 4 TUNERS gives you 40 channels simultaneous watching

Thanks a lot Ocram Friend for clearing my doubts

Right now I have Netgear 600 mbps, 5 Ghz (802.11N) wifi router. And I have tested it using Aver Media TV Tuner Card, and It can able to stream 1 TV channel, and performance is good.

Also, it doesn't matter how many channels that I will stream, but at a time I can view only one channel and I think 600 mbps router can do this well.

Alternately, I can upgrade my router to Netgear 1700 mbps (AC Band) for better speed. Please correct if I am wrong anywhere!!!

Thanks for your help & suggestions!

Thanks & Regards,
ErSehmi

I'm gonna do a wild guess, but 15 channels simultaneous on WiFi, is not going to work well.

Is this some setup where you wanna provide a bunch of people TV in perhaps small hotel or B&B?

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

I am using it at my home just for watching TV anywhere in my home. Instead of sticking it to PC, I just want it for mobility & fun!

So at the max users are 1 or 2 only. So will it work according to what I am thinking

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Anonymous almost 11 years ago

Sure, if everything works and behaves like it should, then it will work like you expect. If you'll have 2 users max and aren't going to record a lot in the background, you'll even have enough with a dual tuner.

This is however a totally different story then your first post. You gave the impression you wanted to always be able to stream 15 channels from 4 transponders.

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

Yes, I always want to stream all the 15 channels up from PC. I need 4 tuner card to stream all these 15 channels so that users have list to choose 1 channel among them. I need 4 tuners to cover channels from 4 transponders. That's why I am thinking of quad tuner card.

There are only 1 or two concurrent users.

And my users don't record the content.

And I am not getting the concept why you are saying only Dual TV Tuner card is enough.

Please suggest!

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Anonymous almost 11 years ago

If there are only 2 USERS watching tv at the SAME TIME, you'll get only 2 concurrent streams, so a dual tuner will do fine, except if these users are going to be watching multiple channels at the same time...

If you have 20 users that wanna watch a channel on different transponders, you'll need 20 tuners.

You need to rethink your mindset and focus more on the words AT THE SAME TIME / SIMULTANEOUS / CONCURRENT, if those 2 users never watch tv at the same moment and only 1 channel at a time, a single tuner will do just fine.

But you are so concerned about the tuner part, but you can't forget the part that hangs outside at the wall, your dish and the LNB, how many outputs have you got? If it's a single output LNB, there's no point in buying a quad card.

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

I would like to add few more things -

I have one dish and 1 LNB. And From that I use 4:1 Power Divider Switch I means from LNB I will get only single wire and near computer I will use power divider switch to divide this into 4 receiver (TV Tuner Inputs) and feed them into quad tuner card.

And the purpose of quad tuner card is let say right now I want to view channel from Transponder 1, after 1 hr I want to view channel from Transponder 2, and again after 1 hour I want to view channel from Transponder 3 - that's why I wanna go for quad tuner card.

Also, I don't wanna change my TVHeadEnd Setup I mean channel configuration part again and again.

Please suggest me again!

Thanks & Regards,
ErSehmi

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Anonymous almost 11 years ago

You'll either have 4 outputs on your LNB going into your quad tuner or you have 1 output going into a single tuner card, you CANNOT split the single output from your LNB into 4 outputs.

You'll need to do some serious research before you go buying and breaking all your stuff.

With your latest explanation of your situation watching 1 channel and then switching to the next and the next and.... A SINGLE tuner will give you that.

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

But Ocram, you had told above that I can stream channels from 1 transponder using single TV Tuner card and now you are saying this

With your latest explanation of your situation watching 1 channel and then switching to the next and the next and.... A SINGLE tuner will give you that.

I am again confused!!!

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Gary Brown almost 11 years ago

your not very clear with your questions and we are having to give you different advice with every new post.

you cannot use a single (output) lnb as there are 4 polarisations used in satellite signals to give broadcasters more space to send out channels, inside an lnb there is hardware to switch between these 4. you need as many outputs on your lnb as you do tuners on your card. there iare unicable and quattro lnbs but ignore these as nether are what you need.
Have a read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-noise_block_downconverter

A single tuner can change mux it is accessing unless a program of higher priority is aaccessing it

as long as you only need access to 4 muxes we can break this down into 2 choices.

1. 2 viewers max at one time (what you have said your looking for)
If you only want 2 streams you need to change your lnb to a dual lnb, 2 cables(shotgun cable) from lnb to tuner card and a dual tuner card, you can have both tuners able to access 2 channels at the same time on your chosen satellite regardless of what mux the channel is on.

2. full 4 muxes available (what you asked about in the first place)
if you want access to 4+ channels over only 4 muxes then you will need a quad lnb, 4 cables as well as a quad tuner and you can watch them on as many devices that can connect without throttling your network. or allow you to record as many channels as you want (hdd speed has to be taken into account).

I recommend that you go for 1 if you only need 2 channels at once.
If you are thinking of recording some programs and think they may overlap, or your wanting to future proof for more users (not taking into account more muxes being wanted or added by your provider) then go for option 2.

Hi Gary,

Please go to this link and find the channel details that I would like to steam from my PC

http://www.dddirectplus.info/channels-list/

http://www.ddinews.gov.in/DTH/Receive/Pages/Receive1.aspx

I have just talked about the Horizontal and Vertical thing that you had explained above with my local distributer. He told me that 4:1 Power Divider will work fine. What Power Divider will do is it will split the frequencies into Horizontal and Vertical.

Since, all of my channels are in Vertical Polarity. I think power divider can able to do the job well.

Also, I have seen this quad output LNB on ebay.com. Please check & suggest me if this is capable to receive these channels.

I have seen some where that these channels are all C-Band. Please suggest me if the following quad LNB will support them or not?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/KSC324-2-DIGITAL-UNIVERSAL-QUAD-OUTPUT-Ku-BAND-FTA-SATELLITE-DISH-2-dB-LNB-HDTV-/330839203877?pt=US_Satellite_LNB_Downconverters&hash=item4d078da025

Thanks a lot for your advice!

Thanks & Regards,
ErSehmi

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Anonymous almost 11 years ago

Show us a link of you 4:1 power divider....

If your so called "Power Divider" is actually a multiswitch you'll still need to get an LNB with 4 outputs, a quattro LNB. Not a QUAD LNB.

With the LNB from your ebay link, you can hookup 4 tuners, without needing you "Power Divider".

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

Although as I had mentioned in my earlier post, my local distributer had suggested me for Power divider. I have searched it on net, and I have come up with the one like shown below -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Channel-Master-2801IFD-8-Way-Splitter-2-GHz-NEW-/180567493946

Also, I am not clear with what is the difference between -
Quattro LNB. Not a QUAD LNB.

I think everybody with clear with my project requirements.

I want to stream the following channels from 4 transponders, that why I need quad tuner card. Since you guys have suggested me for streaming one transponder frequency I need one independent tuner.

http://www.dddirectplus.info/channels-list/

Please suggest me if I am missing anything in my setup.

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Anonymous almost 11 years ago

Throw that "thing" in the garbage bin ASAP. You can indeed hookup your 4 tuners to that thing, but it won't work like it should.

PS: Your local distributor doesn't know as it seems what he's talking about.

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Arshvinder Singh Sehmi almost 11 years ago

My local distributer told me that this Power Divider will split the channels into Horizontal and Vertical Frequencies.

And since all of my channels are under Vertical polarity. And he suggested me that this power divider thing will work, but I am not sure since I am still waiting for my TBS6985 shipping delivery from ebay.

If as per you this power divider thing is garbage, then other option that I am left only is that quad output LNB.

Please suggest!

RE: Help & Suggesion Required Regarding Streaming using TVHeadEnd - Added by Anonymous almost 11 years ago

Your "Power Divider" does not split Horizontal and Vertical polarizations, it prevents other tuners to send power to the LNB, so that only 1 tuner can control the LNB, wich is not the right way to do things.

Since you obviously already bought the TBS 6985, you should also buy a QUAD LNB, wich has 4 outputs that go to the 4 INPUTS of your TBS 6985.
The difference with a QUAD vs QUATTRO is that a QUAD is essentially the same has having 4 dishes pointed at the same satellite, a QUATTRO outputs the 4 polarizations seperate on each output and should be used in combination with a multiswitch for GSO installations.

But do not use that "Power Divider" if you have no idea what it does.
