tvheadend, ntsc, closed captions (teletext)
Added by R S over 11 years ago
All,
I really have no idea if this is possible or not, but after spending the day working on it, and getting nowhere, I figured I'd ask.
I have a RHEL 6.4 box, running tvheadend 3.2.18~g40a8920 with a Hauppauge PVR-250 (soon to add two HVR-2200's). They're all on a university campus cable tv system, which is analog catv (ntsc). I'm trying to stream live tv to some digital signage we have, which means no audio needed, but subtitles/closed captions/teletext would be nice. All the signs run VLC. But from what I've tried, I can't get VLC to see any teletext stream coming from tvheadend.
I'm just trying to do a simple http stream via http://example.edu:9981/stream/channelid//1
I can tell there are closed captions since doing a simple `cat /dev/video0 > ~/test.mpg` for a bit, then running that through ccextractor (ccextractor ~/test.mpg) outputs a valid .srt file.
Any help/thoughts? At this point I'm kind of stuck/lost.
Thanks!

I am in the same boat. I tried the VLC plugin expecting to get the captions working ( they do not in XBMC ) but no good. They are present in the recorded TS files and I can transcode with handbrake and preserve. I was looking for a decent solution to watch live TV and it looks like the stream that is passed to VLC has lost the captions.
Can anyone comment on the state of captions and or subtitles, I looked at the HTS documents and do see some defines for dvbsub, and teletext so it looks like it may be possible ??
