Watch live TV from local TVH, record using remote TVH

Added by Christopher G. over 8 years ago

Hi!
I purchased a WeTek Openelec box to have a nice compact DVB-C set top box for my parents. I configured it with tvheadend as a local backend and frontend and I can watch live TV no problemo.
The thing is that I've got a home server running with a twin tuner and loads of storage capacity that I would like to use for recordings. I want to use the tvheadend funcitionality itself not just the storage via SMB or NFS mount.
Ryan over here https://tvheadend.org/boards/4/topics/20261 has a similarish problem but not quite the same. Via the article linked there https://freetoairamerica.wordpress.com/2015/10/24/how-to-use-two-tvheadend-backends-with-kodi-or-xbmc/ I found out that I might be able to run 2 tvheadend clients at the same time on my box. Haven't tested this yet but would be a first step towards the goal.
My question is, is it possible to have the recording function delegated to a different tvheadend backend? After all I guess the client would trigger a recording action on the backend it is connected to which would be the local backend in my case. I would like to have it though, that live TV is from the local backend but when I hit record, it will trigger a recording action on the remote backend.

Any hints or ideas?

Hi
Not sure if you have made any progress with 2 tvheadend clients at the same time on your box. This might be confusing because of "You will see your channel list populated with channel numbers from both backends, and you will see recordings from both backends, etc."
Anyway, I am currently working on a Kodi addon that will allow accessing EPG entries and managing recordings on a remote or local TVH backend. It will be a basic TVH client without the live TV functionality. The user interface will be basic with separate selection lists for channels and EPG entries and yes/no dialogs for scheduling / cancelling / deleting recordings. It will run separately under “programmes” in Kodi. I currently have an incomplete prototype and expect to be able to share it within a week or so.
Please let me know what you think.

I think this is a great idea, especially if the user interface was more friendly that the current one, which has very low SAF.

What I'd like to see is a per-channel vertical program list with buttons for +/- day and +/- channel. Using the +/- buttons should keep the display [roughly] displaying the same time of day. It would also be good to have the ability to autorec, which currently only seems to be available from the web interface.

Hi

The mentioned Kodi addon is now available at
https://github.com/ulibuck/script.htsp.EPG

It is the initial version and my first Kodi addon. So please be patient.
It allows accessing EPG entries and managing recordings on a remote or local TVH back end.
Not sure that my UI with the scrollable selection lists will have a high SAF.
No ability to autorec at this point.
Also, the UI is in English only.

Be careful: confirming "Delete" on an existing recording will delete it for good. I take no responsibility for any undesirable effects.

Please let me know what you think.
