"No Descrambler" on channels with no CCI encryption.
Added by John Nevill about 12 years ago
I have an hdhomerun prime with a Comcast m-card and HD subscription. I have compiled tvheadend 3.2 from source on my Ubuntu 12.04 x64 machine and I am using xbmc on the same machine as a front end. I am able to use the hdhomerun_config_gui program to watch any channel that is in my subscription. Furthermore, I am able to watch any channel using the hdhomerun:// protocol.
tvheadend is able to grab the mux for each of Comcast's frequencies and I have added all of my services to the channel line up and mapped them over to a schedulesdirect EPG. After doing all of this I can only watch the tradition over-the-air channels through tvheadend. All other channels give the error "No Descrambler" (using xbmc as a front end).
I have queried the the hdhomerun prime box to see if there was any encryption on these channels, but they appear exactly similar to the local channels. Below is the information for AMC HD.
Tuner 0 Status Virtual Channel none Frequency 559.778 MHz Program Number none Authorization none CCI Protection none CGMS Protection none Modulation Lock qam256 PCR Lock locked Signal Strength 67% (-20.3 dBmV) Signal Quality 84% (32.8 dB) Symbol Quality 100% Streaming Rate none Resource Lock none
Note there is no CCI Protection on this channel, but yet tvheadend thinks it needs to descramble it.
Any pointers here would be greatly appreciated.

Has anybody come up with an sure way of getting HDHomerun Prime truly working with Tvheadend?? If so can you provide a how to guide on getting this up and running to support all channels.

In short, no. Not easily. Save yourself the headache and just install mythbuntu and run mythtv. You'll be up and running with a hdhomerun prime in about 10 minutes. That's what I ended up doing. Working great with xbmc as a front end so far.

I read through this thread with optimism and hope, that my issue may already have been resolved. Unfortunately, as I came to the end, my hope had faded and I was left with a deep acceptance of depression. As it seems, my HDHomerun Prime will likely have to instead use MythTV which is in my opinion a much clunkier solution (who want to use X to install?!). Can anyone brighten my day and tell me that this is still being worked on here? Or should I walk away in utter disappointment?

Sorry, boss. Unfortunately TVHeadEnd is still not a good solution for the HDHR products, nor is it a good solution for customers of Comcast (in many areas) who might find that their muxes don't have unique TSIDs, which TVHeadEnd needs to operate effectively.
The good news is that MythTV, while having an unarguably clunky ui, is a great 'set it up once and forget about it forever' solution as a backend for XBMC's PVR functionality. Plus, with the equally ugly mythweb, you can set up series recordings with automagical commercial skipping and the really cool ability to stream DVR'd programs outside of your home. Instead of an X server you can get a quick VNC server running and do the backend set up over that too. Six of one, half a dozen of the other...
I wrote up the majority of the steps to get Mythbackend working with my HDHR Prime here: http://www.silicondust.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=14741 since there are a couple of points that you have to get just right to make Myth happy.
I've been using that set up for over a year on my family's primary TV and will never go back to the cablebox and it's sub par experience.
Stick with it! The payoff is definitely worth it.

John - Thanks for the response. You've renewed an ember of optimism in getting this device to play nice in my home network. I'll definitely run through your guide to getting Myth setup. I'll gave it a cursory run through before, but hadn't gotten too far. Again, thanks for responding to a 1-year old thread, much appreciated. Off I go to play with Myth.
Ben.
